About Thomas Hayashi
Connections between the environment and technology are fundamental to creating a sustainable future. My specialization primarily relates to implementing machine learning solutions and spatial data analyses to ecological or novel biostatistical problems. I'm a co-author on a paper where we implemented random forest machine learning algorithms in R for grass ecology. In this paper, I worked to help predict the variations in California grasses depending on the regions where they grew and the climatic variables associated with each region. My graduate thesis related to implementing machine learning pipelines in Python in order to generate accurate and precise classification algorithms for wetland restoration while also comparing the performances of various models. These algorithms predicted the appearances of at-risk wetland bird populations in an attempt to help guide restoration efforts. I presented this research with my research team at the 2020 Ecological Society of America conference. My professional background primarily relates to spatial data analysis, predictive modeling, and data visualization. Previously, I was contracted with the California Department of Public Health as a research data analyst through the Sequoia Foundation. As a contractor I worked on several wildfire health impact publications including the full stack development of the California Wildfire Smoke and Air Pollution Health Burden Mapping Dashboard web application. Currently, I am a Research Scientist II within the Environmental Health Investigations Branch for the California Department of Public Health. I study the latest literature on harmful algal blooms and their impacts on public health in California. Additionally, I interface with a statewide interagency network, as well as local level counties to help mitigate negative human and animal outcomes related to harmful algal blooms. Lastly, I document all individuals potential harmed by algal blooms in California and guarantee the maintenance and accuracy of California’s HAB database. My Bachelor's in Environmental Studies helps guide me to think of wholistic solutions, taking into consideration all elements of a problem, while my Master's in Information Systems helps me to pinpoint exact solutions to systemic issues. Being born and raised on Maui helped instill in me a reverence for nature and for protecting human health. The culmination of my academic work, research, and professional career give me the toolset to be an effective research scientist to protect California’s public health against harmful algal blooms.
Listed skills include R, Computer Science, Economics, Ecology, and 3 others.

Research Scientist Ii
CurrentLead scientist from the California Department of Public Health - Environmental Health Investigations Branch studying harmful algal blooms in California. I primarily analyze and investigate human case reports and assist with the surveillance of any toxic blooms across the state. I communicate extensively with additional HAB monitoring organizations throughout the state and contribute in the maintenance of California’s internal One Health Harmful Algal Bloom dashboard and California’s contributions towards CDC’s National Harmful Algal Bloom Database. Additionally, I am a co-representative for CDPH and California in CDC’s National Harmful Algal Bloom Community of Practice. In the future, I hope to develop a GIS application to help inform the public of harmful algal bloom vulnerability.
Research Data Analyst
Joint researcher in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health Environmental Health Investigation branch where I build predictive models for various health outcomes. My specialization being in predictive model building and spatial analyses. Furthermore, I created several maps depicting our analyses which are being used in publication.
Student Researcher
Researcher for San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory and Santa Clara University utilizing machine learning and GIS in R in order to determine trend analyses on endangered wetland native bird populations in California.-Analyzed wetland bird banding data from the Coyote Creek through generating linear regressions-Studied, inputted, and reviewed climate and bird data spanning from 1986-2019-Created predictive machine learning algorithms utilizing random forest regressions from bird observation data joined with climatic data spanning the last thirty years.
Student Researcher
Grass Ecology Lab by Dr. Sandel studying trait responsiveness in grass species throughout the Bay Area and predicting how these species react to changing climates using machine learning in R.-Utilized statistical analysis of leaf trait data via linear regressions in R to clean up data on over 50 species spanning 4 years, ~3000 entries analyzed.-Garnered greater understanding in utilizing R for GIS analysis of species ranges with climate and geography data.-Worked with a research team and conducted field research
Data Analyst
Helped maintain the accuracy of Apple Maps data. Analyzed international datasets and guaranteed accuracy and continuity within the overall mapping data utilized by Apple Maps.
Apprentice
Santa Clara University's community outreach and research garden. As an apprentice, I manage volunteers and help organize events, such as the weekly farm stand. Daily duties constitute harvesting, planting, and the occasional building project.-Managed the Organic Certification Process of the Forge Garden by developing a database containing yields, crop rotations, and inputs. -Led weekly volunteer hours teaching students and community members basic gardening skills (planting, seeding, harvesting, cultivation).-Helped organize, plan, and lead Forge Garden events for both SCU and the greater Santa Clara community.
Student Assistant
Student assistant in the Financial aid office. Emphases in aiding with organization of financial aid documents and handling student and parent inquiries.Addressed students and parents concerns on financial aid for attending Santa Clara University.-Provided students with resources to help secure additional funding.
Peer Educator
Aiding Professor CJ Gabbe in teaching students how to create geographical data visualizations using R for ENVS 117: Intermediate GIS-Taught and advised students on the computer language R and how to use it to create geographic information systems.-Acted as the Environmental Studies department teaching assistant for R on GIS related projects.
Student Researcher
Using R to statistically and geographically analyze extreme heat events and to generate functions to automate this process in R.
Kitchen Assistant
Learned various customer service skills in addition to restaurant management skills by working in both the back and front of the house. Kitchen work included prep, dish washing, smoothie making, and the making of acai bowls. I would also serve customers directly by managing the register.
