My educational background includes undergraduate and medical school work at the University of Kansas (undergraduate 1969, School of Medicine 1973). While fellowship trained in transplantation surgery, I have maintained an interest in all aspects of general surgery including hepatobiliary and minimally invasive surgery. I have also had extensive experience in trauma care and served in the Army Medical Corps from 1991 to 2000, receiving an honorable discharge at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In the process, I completed various Army schools, including the Combat Casualty Care Course, Advanced Officer School, and Command and General Staff College. Professionally, I am Board Certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of a number of prestigious societies including the Southern Surgical Association, the American Surgical Association, and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. I am also a member of the American Association for the History of Medicine and a Fellow of the American Osler Society. I have peer-reviewed for several scientific journals including Military Medicine. As a clinical scientist, amateur historian, and writer, I have authored or co-authored well over 110 scientific articles including five in the field of history of medicine.
