During the summer of 2018, I started an internship with the BBSRC, a position gained through the highly competitive Change100 programme run by the charity Leonard Cheshire. My placement was with the International Relations Unit - a team tasked with fostering partnerships between UK research institutions and international partners through programmes such as the Newton Fund and Horizon 2020. My principal role as International Relations Officer was to assess the previous ten years’ worth of grants and write a series of concise case studies aimed at a general audience to highlight excellent examples of high-impact research. This role was challenging as I regularly assessed and synthesised documents on complex subjects and required regular communication and liaising with senior researchers. These case studies were published on the BBSRC website. I also took the initiative to design a database to improve the tracking of promising grants in their early stages by assessing the number of quality outcomes, such as conference appearances, published papers, or the formation of additional academic or commercial partnerships. Additionally, to maximise my limited time with the Research Council, I often took the opportunity to offer my services to other departments within BBSRC to gain a broader overview of work done within the research council. This included working with the BBSRC Peer Review Unit on grant submissions, sitting in on meetings with the Global Food Security programme and assisting in the editing of an action report, and acting as a facilitator during a conference between over 50 leading researchers, DEFRA, and industry leaders at Rothamsted Research in August 2018. This internship gave me a robust theoretical background in scientific research funding while developing my problem-solving, research, and teamwork skills in a lively and diverse office environment.
