I deliver vision and strategy for a Department of around 300 music students from undergraduate to PhD level, and manage ca 70 full and part-time staff. I lead Music's efforts to provide an exceptional student experience and execute the UoS’s research, civic, sustainability and estates strategies. I work with community partners including local government, the university concert hall, community arts organisations and schools.I am a musicologist with interests in global music history, Science and Technology Studies and most recently the energy humanities. I have held a Mid-Career Fellowship of the British Academy and from 2018-2023 I was an Alan Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute, where I led the project “Jazz as Social Machine.” In addition to my duties as Head of Music at Southampton I am an Associate Director of the university’s Web Science Institute.I have written or co-edited three books, numerous articles, and co-present the podcast Sounding History. I’ve supervised 14 PhDs.

As an Associate Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton, I help Southampton's interdisciplinary web and AI scientists to think about music and the arts, and encourage my colleagues in the Arts and Humanities to engage with the data and AI revolutions that mark our time. I also supervise PhD projects across disciplinary boundaries, working with political scientists, computer scientists, sociologists and others to mentor a new generation of transdisciplinary scholars and leaders.

Led the project "Jazz as Social Machine," represented University of Southampton on the Turing Special Interest Group Humanities and Data Science.

Played with leading German early music ensembles including La Stagione Frankfurt, Das neue Orchester, Capella Augustina and Musica Antiqua Cologne. Toured and recorded with my own chamber music ensemble (Ensemble Campanile).
