In a small project group we designed and applied a business plan for a luxury tent safari project. This project is a new initiative of Khiri Travel in order to enter a small niche market within the emerging tourism industry of Cambodia. Clients will overnight in the shade of Cambodia's most beautiful sights, attractions and locations and at the same time they will experience a certain degree of 'hotel luxury' in the form of comfortable beds, chairs and bathroom facilities. In this way, they will have a more intense experience of both nature and culture. The tent safari project totally community based.In order to make this project a success, we closely cooperated with the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and Fine Art, the Global Heritage Fund and the local community of Banteay Chhmar. I learned a lot about tourism in general and more specific about tourism in South East Asia. Cooperating with local businesses and government agencies was -as expected- extremely challenging, but a success. Cultural differences are highly delicate and cannot be learned from Powerpoint spreadsheets. You have to experience them yourself. I loved it!
