Fresh from a summer travelling around Europe and the UK, I've recently joined Hydrock, now Stantec, as a graduate structural engineer on their Bristol team! With practical experience in the design and installation of special timber construction from my time at Hybrid Structures, I'm excited to bring this knowledge to help develop net zero innovation in a dynamic and rapidly growing company. I first developed my interest in alternative materials whilst studying at Durham University. Through a research placement with the University of British Columbia Okanagan's ASSET group as part of the MITACS Globalink program, I helped develop a novel proprietary concrete connection system for timber frames. My final year project was focused on the mechanical behaviour of interlocking compressed earth bricks at meso- and macro-scales; this is a potential key material for low-carbon low-rise residential developments in the future, with challenges in overcoming scaling up, standardisation and a perception gap within industry.At Hybrid Structures, I developed proficiency in both project management and material/connection design, creating structures in accordance to client needs as well as practicalities in assembly and supply chain procurement. Effective and thoughtful design is integral to overcoming unforeseen issuesAs well, I'm fascinated by the development of future cities, such as phasing out car dependency and enhancing resiliency and social cohesion in an ever more challenging world - please reach out with any opportunities which might let me explore these possibilities!
