About Tom Springer

For me, to progress in one's life and career isn't as much about straight lines as concentric circles that loop from one passion and experience to the next. Consider my real life example. After barely graduating from high school with a 1.9 GPA, I worked in factories and construction crews until age 23, before deciding to study at a community college ... for a job in HVAC. It was a good choice, but not for someone like me. My inepitude with tools, and my aptitude for daydreaming made me a danger to myself and others (I still have an acetylene torch scar to prove it.). Except for this: an English 110 course, a general ed requirement that my trade-minded brethren all groaned about. The teacher, as only a community college instructor would bother to do, saw something; an overlooked talent for words that I'd never taken seriously. He lit a small spark that I'd later kindle into the flame of my true career. Still, I had to fail-forward from an HVAC job (where I was mercifully laid off) before I pursued university studies in PR and journalism with a vengeance. That led to communication jobs with a major medical center, a $10 billion foundation, a certain golden-domed university in South Bend, and a beloved nature center with 1,100 acres of deep woods outside my office window. My passion for stories that move people -- to care for the natural world, to give generously for the public good, to pursue social justice and equity -- has been a through line in my career. As a magazine writer, speechwriter, author, foundation grantmaker, and nonprofit executive these attributes have allowed me to serve at mission-driven, field-leading organizations. I've stopped trying predict where the next circle will overlap, but the process hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Listed skills include Speech Writing, Program Development, Strategic Communications, Research, and 19 others.

Vice President Of Development

Current

Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States

Tell the Kalamazoo Nature Center's story in a way that builds interest, engagement and support for the good work we do to connect people with nature. In my role, I manage a team that connects with donors, members and foundations to help them understand our value as a community-based organization with a global view of ecology, equity, conservation and sustainability. In practice, this means that I work at a 1,100-acre destination attraction located five miles north of Kalamazoo with 14 miles of gorgeous hiking trails. And, for the flimsiest of reasons, I will happily step outside my office at the Visitor's Center to go enjoy some of it.

Jun 2022 - Present

Grants Manager

Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States

As the organization's first grant manager, developed relationships with staff and external funders to create and submit proposals for funding. While working 20 hours per week (apart from my personal consultant work), secured $240,000 in grants, well exceeding my $150,000 goal. In addition to fundraising, played an active role in developing messaging and narrative for the organization's racial equity response to the murder of George Floyd. Additionally, I drafted executive communications for the CEO that appeared in news releases, funding documents, newsletters and the annual report.

Mar 2020 - Jun 2022

Senior Consultant

Sunfish Consulting, Llc

Three Rivers, Michigan

Senior Consultant at the company I founded to provide executive and program-level communications support to nonprofit organizations that serve the public good. Cllients include: University of Notre Dame, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, University of Michigan, Woodward Hines Education Foundation, Land Trust Alliance, Global Catholic Climate Movement, Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership, Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy and City of Stockton, California.

Author

Freelance

Michigan, United States

Author of "The Star in the Sycamore," (Mission Point Press) a collection of essays about "the wild nearby" of the Upper Midwest that was named a Michigan Notable Book of 2021 by the Library of Michigan. My earlier collection of essays "Looking for Hickories" (University of Michigan Press) was named a Michigan Notable Book of 2009.

Managing Director, Environmental Change Initiative

South Bend, Indiana Area

As managing director of Notre Dame's Environmental Change Initiative (ND-ECI) I worked across the university with a staff of 60 Notre Dame faculty whose research seeks multidisciplinary solutions to problems posed by climate change. This includes super storms, droughts, floods, famines, infectious disease outbreaks and the ecological and humanitarian challenges that they pose. Importantly, ND-ECI's approach reflects the mission of Notre Dame, given its special concern for the poor and disadvantaged, who suffer the most from climate-related shocks and stresses. My role involved program development, strategic communication and donor development, all as a means to advance the good work of ND-ECI.

Jun 2016 - Apr 2018

Communications Manager

Battle Creek Michigan

Served in a range of communications and program development functions, which included executive communications (speechwriting, position papers, annual reports, board presentations) and communications productions (wrote books, edited the foundation's magazine, produced videos and website content). As program manager in Learning and Impact, I helped the foundation find new ways to "productize" and communicate to the public and policymakers the actionable knowledge gleaned from its programming. Additionally, I served as program officer on a $3 million portfolio of grants that promoted non-motorized trails and nature-themed educational programs for children.
