Thomas McCormick was the first instructor in medical ethics for the UW School of Medicine and has taught a variety of ethics courses since joining the faculty in 1974 in themes such as the doctor-patient relationship, caring for dying patients, and introduction to clinical ethics. Current courses include: BH 511 "A clinical ethics seminar, "BH 512 "The Human Face of Medicine," and BH 518 "Spirituality in Health Care." McCormick is co-director of the UWSOM Summer Bioethics Seminar, along with Dr. Denise Dudzinski, offered each summer during the first week in August. (Aug 4-8, 2014--the 27th Annual). Each summer, for the past 9 years, Dr. McCormick has been course director for a short course (5 days) in bioethics, offered to 10 top students from Hyogo College of Medicine, Hyogo, Japan. In Autumn Quarter, 2012, Dr. McCormick was co-chair with Dr. Timberlake, of the required ethics class for second year medical students, HUBIO 548. McCormick currently holds a 40% time contract at the UW and teaches in summer and autumn quarters.In W/S quarters, McCormick travels to Arizona where he is an adjunct professor of bioethics at Midwestern University, Glendale Branch. In Spring, 2013, he taught BMED-517 "Ethics of Research and Experimentation", and in 2014 "Ethical Issues Surrounding Death & Dying." He has taught at Midwestern since 2002, offering one of a variety of courses over this span. Dr. McCormick continues to publish articles in the field of bioethics, his most recent is "Ethical and Spiritual Concerns Near the End of LIfe," Journal of Religion, Spirituality and Aging, 09/29/2012, Routledge and he has a book chapter in press entitled "Ethical Issues in Audio Prostheses" in the forth-coming Handbook of Neuroethics, Springer Press, coing out in June 2014. In Spring of 2013, McCormick presented lectures in Bioethics for a week in Kyorin University, Hachioji, Japan. (Tokyo)
