About Thomas Neil

In my current role as a Publishing Specialist at Frontiers in Nutrition, I focus on identifying vibrant research communities to enhance the visibility and impact of their work. By highlighting groundbreaking research, I aim to accelerate scientific progress, inspire engaging discussions, and introduce novel approaches and technologies. I collaborate with leading researchers to develop compelling research topics and manage these projects from inception to publication, ensuring high-quality contributions and alignment with our journal's strategic goals. This role allows me to integrate my passion for advancing scientific knowledge with a proactive, community-driven approach to scholarly publishing. Before moving into scholarly publishing, I completed a PhD on the hydrodynamics and energetics of jet propulsion swimming in marine invertebrates. This work involved quantifying swimming performance in various marine species, including nautilus, scallops, and jellyfish, seeking insights into the mechanisms behind their pulsed jet production. The application of pulsed jets for increased thrust and the exploration of biomimetic design possibilities was subsequently studied. My postdoctoral work moved into the fascinating world of the acoustic ecology of bats and moths, specifically the sound-absorbing characteristics of moth wings. Moths, facing intense predation pressure from bats, have evolved various defenses. My focus was on unraveling the mechanisms through which moth wing scales absorb sound energy from bat echolocation. Notably, our findings revealed that moth wing scales function as broadband resonant sound absorbers. This discovery has led to ongoing efforts to create artificial structures mimicking these absorption properties, with the ultimate goal of developing ultrathin sound absorbers for noise mitigation applications.Throughout my research career, collaboration with museums has been integral, utilizing their collections for experimentation. I've also demonstrated a commitment to international knowledge exchange, presenting my research at various conferences. Beyond my research pursuits, I've actively contributed to the academic community by demonstrating animal physiology modules at the undergraduate level and providing support for students' final year, master's, and PhD projects. This multifaceted journey underscores my dedication to advancing knowledge and fostering innovation across diverse scientific domains.

My research focuses on bioacoustics, in particular the interactions of bats and moths. Whilst visual camouflage is a much studied and prevalent phenomenon, for acoustics, camouflage is far less intuitive.Predation pressure by bats has driven the evolution of a host of defences in nocturnal moths. An emerging field in this area is biosonar camouflage, in which naturally occurring mechanisms act to reduce the echo reflectivity of the moths, making them harder to detect by the biosonar of bats. The scales of moth wings are a key component of this potential defence, and offer a rich range of potential ultrasonic diffraction mechanisms to create biosonar camouflage.I am working to characterise the echo reflectivity of moths and understand exactly how the complex lattice of scales on the wings of moths might act to absorb sound energy. It is hoped that a greater understanding of these sub-wavelength mechanisms will have considerable impact in the fields of noise control systems and the development of ultra-thin dynamic sound absorbers.

My research involves the study of jet propulsion swimming in marine molluscs. Part of my research focuses on the hydrodynamics of jet propulsion swimming, using PIV to study the fluid motion around the animals as they swim in order to gain insight into the energetics of their locomotion. From this I can learn more about biological propulsion systems and the way in which they work. It is possible that knowledge gained from animal locomotion can be applied in the designs of vehicles such as submarines, leading to bio-inspired designed and improved vehicle performance. The other side of my research looks at the physiology of the muscular systems that drive jet propulsion swimming in these animals. I have been able to study how the muscles produce the power required for swimming both in vivo and in vitro and looked at how this changes with size. Studying muscle physiology in this way has allowed me to gain a greater knowledge of how muscle power output changes with body size, this can then be applied to muscular systems that are too complex to study themselves.
