For three years I worked as a Structural Integrity Engineer in the Assessment Technology Group of the Structural Integrity Branch of EDF Energy. This group develops and maintains the structural assessment codes R5 and R6, the assessment procedures for determining the high temperature response of structures and the assessment of defects.In my role I provided expert advice on the current and future integrity of metal components within the boilers and reactor pressure vessel of Advanced Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactors. I developed the R5 code through data analysis, finite element modelling and conducting physical tests. I also applied the code in the assessment of components, ensuring nuclear safety. As part of this work I managed a long term test program of industrial bolts, successfully bidding for funding, designing the physical test rig and managing the test matrix. I was the Quality Engineer for my branch, responsible for the self assessment of our quality planning and acted as a representative of the branch to the wider company on quality matters. I was also responsible for managing the Component Life Assessment work pack, which ensures confidence in the integrity of components within the reactor cores of the EDF-Energy fleet and has a yearly budget of £500,000. I managed both contracts and contractors, track and predict spending, and influence engineers to meet deadlines.Furthermore, I was involved in the design of recruitment assessment centres, act as an assessor and present at STEM events such as the Cheltenham Science Festival and at local universities.
