Involvement in a variety of scientific projects has exposed me to both field (on shore and ship-based) and laboratory research in a broad range of geochemical and environmental systems. I have considerable experience in analytical geochemistry, specializing in fluid analyses. In 2000 I founded the University of South Florida Center for Water Analysis, a laboratory that specializes in the analysis of “difficult” water samples; high salinity and/or complex matrices. The laboratory carries out research and commercial projects and is one of the few laboratories in the world that can speciate arsenic, antimony and selenium at the sub-parts per billion level. Since my arrival at the University of Bremen in 2008 I implemented the coupling of HPLC and HR-ICP-MS (a first for any Geoscience Department) and expended overall analytical capabilities by adding δ18O and δD determinations on water samples by CRDS. Although I consider myself an Environmental Geochemist with a profound interest in inorganic geochemistry, I greatly appreciate the importance of collaborating across the boundaries of my discipline. The field areas of my research projects are often located in politically and geographically challenging areas, which requires a combination of careful planning and ingenuity. I have organized and supervised international field-based research in several Caribbean Islands, Papua New Guinea, Western Pacific, New Zealand, Italy, Chile, Mexico and the United States, amongst others.
