Undergraduate Adjunct Faculty
Adjunct Assistant Professor
Assistant United States Attorney, Eastern District Of Missouri
For over 17 years, I was routinely relied upon by U. S., Attorneys, supervisors, and staff for advice, guidance, and thoughtful yet decisive problem solving and decision making. As part of my active litigation practice, I spearheaded investigations and prosecuted complex felonies including crimes resulting in death, "cold case" investigations, and certain white collar offenses. I routinely appeared before juries and judges in all phases of criminal proceedings including indictment, arraignment, detention hearings, suppression hearings, changes of plea, trial, and supervised release revocation hearings. After successfully obtaining criminal convictions, I regularly drafted appellate briefs to and conduct oral argument before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Chief, Criminal Division
I served as the district's criminal chief overseeing and coordinating thousands of criminal investigations, prosecutions, and the 50 criminal attorneys in two offices handling them, including those related to white collar crime, public corruption, terrorism, organized crime, firearms, and narcotics. As criminal chief during the COVID pandemic and civil arrest in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder, among other things, I led the office through rapid transition to a mobile environment, maintained continued operations, and ensured that two federal grand juries remained in session throughout that turbulent time.
Instructor, Executive Office Of United States Attorneys
For over a decade, I instructed at the National Advocacy Center, a training institution on legal and leadership skills operated by the Department of Justice Office of Legal Education, with a special emphasis on the Department’s two-week trial advocacy course for new federal prosecutors.
Senior Litigation Counsel
My responsibilities as Senior Litigation Counsel were three-fold: (1) the training and development of Assistant United States Attorneys; (2) the vetting of trial strategies and providing direct support to attorneys prior to and during the course of jury trials; and (3) the selection of and providing oversight, mentorship, and training to law students serving within the office throughout the course of a year.
Attorney General Review Committee On Capital Cases Member
I was selected by the United States Attorney General to serve two years as a member of the United States Capital Case Review Committee where I was responsible for advising the Attorney General on when to seek or not seek the death penalty.
Assistant United States Attorney, Civil Division
I was one of eight attorneys responsible for the affirmative and defensive representation of the United States in all stages of federal litigation involving employment discrimination, immigration, personal injury, and medical malpractice. My active civil litigation practice involved the investigation of qui tam relator's claims and the prosecution health care fraud and drug diversion including oversight of underlying investigations, subpoena issuance, discovery, and formal presentation of government's position during negotiations.
Associate
During my one-year tenure as interim Associate General Counsel for a Fortune 30 subsidiary, I oversaw the management of nationwide litigation, handling both prosecution and defense. While at Bryan Cave, I successfully defended clients in investigations by the Securities & Exchange Commission, NASD, and U.S. Attorney, coordinating responses to subpoenas. I achieved a favorable judgment and punitive damages in a bench trial at the Saint Louis County Circuit Court and served as second chair in a two-week arbitration at the New York American Arbitration Association International Centre for Dispute Resolution. Additionally, as the sole associate on a complex breach of contract case, I managed extensive discovery, deposed eight fact witnesses, and authored motions and mediation briefs that led to a seven-figure settlement in favor of the client. My responsibilities included all aspects of trial practice, such as expert and fact witness depositions, preparing clients and witnesses for testimony, and arguing motions. Over a two-year period, I also handled the firm's client and employee traffic docket.
