I lived and worked in the US for 4 months as a ski and snowboard instructor. It was an influential experience in every aspect of my life. Whilst working in the United States, I was entrusted with responsibilities far beyond those which I had ever previously been, both within the actual job as well as general living. As an instructor, my responsibilities included maintaining the safety and happiness of multiple children and adults at once, all on differing and sometimes substantially seperate skill levels. This experience taught me many valuable skills, especially concerning communication with an extensive range of people. Within my job, I would meet a fresh group of students who I would be teaching, and simultaneously be creating and maintaining a relationship with for a minimum of 7 hours. However, due to my success in the maintenance of such professional relationships, this would sometimes extend throughout the season. Although this did become a somewhat exhausting process, it was extremely rewarding in both the teaching aspect as well as the lessons and skills curated throughout the job experience. The social aspect was also reflected in my day to day, as I was constantly meeting new people within work and, usually through those avenues, beyond.Outside of my professional role, I faced many social obstacles which I had to learn to overcome, especially autonomous responsibility. I was forced to became self sufficient in almost all aspects of life. This was extremely challenging, as i shifted from having an extensive support system of friends and family to being mostly self reliant. Although I did foster a support network whilst there, the dramatic shift to self-reliance has become an immensely valuable skill in my toolset.
