Profile bio

About Thomas Stopka

I am a full professor and epidemiologist with the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine. I have led and contributed to a number of multi-methods, interdisciplinary, translational studies focused on the intersection of substance use and misuse, infectious disease, and opioid overdose since 1999. I have employed qualitative, geographic information systems (GIS), spatial epidemiological, and biostatistical methods while leading and contributing to observational studies and clinical trials aimed at improving our understanding of and curbing the ill effects of the opioid crisis. Currently, I am MPI on a NIDA-funded study to predict to prevent opioid overdose employing Bayesian spatiotemporal modeling, a NIDA-funded clinical trial to assess the effectiveness of a mobile telemedicine-based HCV treatment intervention among rural opioid users, and a NIDA-funded clinical trial to determine the ideal timing of provision of extended-release buprenorphine to people who are incarcerated in Massachusetts' jails. I am also a Co-I on the NIH and SAMHSA-funded HEALing Communities Study to reduce opioid overdose deaths in Massachusetts, in which I am leading GIS and spatial epidemiological analyses and site PI for the NIH and SAMHSA-funded Massachusetts JCOIN study, evaluating administration of medication for opioid use disorder in 10 houses of corrections. Since 2020, I have also contributed to a number of SARS CoV-2 epidemiological studies to assess COVID-19 testing and vaccination disparities across Massachusetts, employing spatial analytical and statistical models as well as qualitative methods to identify communities at greatest risk, and inform public health and clinical interventions to address inequities. I teach courses in GIS, spatial epidemiology, and research methods.
