Thomas Tan graduated with Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Finance) from the Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia in 1998. He started his loss adjusting career in MSM, Johor Bahru office in 1998. During the first 6 years of his loss adjusting career, he had in addition to handling his own cases, also involved in investigating several multi-million Ringgit fire losses. In 2003, Thomas received The Best Student Award (AMII) by the Malaysian Insurance Institute for his excellent academic achievement. In view of his outstanding performances and passion to the profession, Thomas was seconded to start MSM Melaka office in the 3rd quarter of 2003. MSM Melaka office and operations were built and developed by Thomas from scratch. In a short period of 3 years, Thomas had built up MSM Melaka office as the leading and largest loss adjusting outfit in Melaka. He has successfully dealt with many large, complicated and fraudulent fire losses as well as other classes of losses in Southern Peninsula Malaysia. Assignments recently handled and closed by him comprise multi-million Ringgit claims involving lead-frame manufacturer, furniture manufacturer, power plant losses, engineering losses, etcFollowing his successful development of Melaka office, Thomas was relocated back to MSM Johor Bahru office to carry out his enlarged role in Jan 2010. Thomas is currently Assistant General Manager based in MSM, Johor Bahru, in-charge of Southern Region offices, i.e. Johor Bahru and Melaka). He is a hands-on person and he gets directly involved in all aspects of claims investigations and loss adjusting. He was the lead investigator in a MYR20mil fraudulent and complicated fire claim which was successfully repudiated by Insurers and evidences proven in court. In addition to adjusting works, he is also actively involved in carry out training of adjusters and CPD training courses for Insurers in both English and Mandarin.

Senior Manager / Assistant General ManagerMclaren Saksama (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd 2010 - Dec 2019Johor BahruTransferred back to MSM Johor Bahru as Senior Manager in 2010. Handled a large fraudulent and complicated fire claim shortly after the transfer. Planned the aspects to be investigated and personally conducted in-depth investigation to prove that the claimant has financial motive in setting fires to his factory. The case was trialed in High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court of Malaysia. The evidences gathered were so strong and all the Courts decided the claimant was the party who set fire to his own factory. Also investigated a MYR35mil claim involving collapsed of reclaimed land under CAR Policy. Investigation was assisted by an independent consulting engineer. Investigation revealed that the collapsed of reclaimed land (about 1km2) was due to defective design and workmanship. Handled several explosion and machinery breakdown claims in 2012 and 2013, involving oil mill and refinery. The challenges faced were on the Business Interruption aspect where the claimants were setting up new plants in Malaysia, hence no historical financial data available as reference. Extensive researches and analysis were conducted to derive at fair settlement amounts agreed by both Insurers and Insured. Promoted as AGM in late 2013. In 2014, handled several large construction claims involving a power plant expansion project. Foundations erected at site were found displaced and large Delay in Start-up claim anticipated. Working closely with consulting engineers on cause of foundation displacement and forecast of delay and its’ impact on overall project progress. Also handled breakdown of gas turbine for a petrochemical plant including business interruption of about MYR30million in 2014.Investigated a MYR50 million suspicious claim involving alleged loss of large machineries due to theft and damage to buildings said to be due to malicious damage. Trial of the case is still on-going.

Assistant Manager / Branch ManagerMclaren Saksama (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd 2003 - 2010MelakaTransferred to Melaka state to start-up a new branch office from scratch in 2003. Trainee adjusters and administration staff were recruited and trained. Planned and organized a cocktail party to launch the opening of Melaka branch. The Melaka branch office became the leading and largest loss adjusting outfit in Melaka state in a short period of 3 years. Also successfully dealt with many large, complicated and fraudulent fire losses involving poultry farms, furniture factories, power plants, etc. Successfully preserved evidence which enabled Insurers’ legal advisor to repudiate several large fraudulent claims. Settled several large claims by negotiation and below mandates given by Insurers. Expanded Melaka branch office in 2006 and doubled up staff force and office space. Widespread flood occurred in Dec 2006 and many areas in Southern Peninsula of Malaysia were affected. The Melaka office was designated as the flood control center. On the spot settlement approach was adopted with Insurers’ approval to resolve claims involving domestic Policies. Several Flood Bulletins were issued from the Melaka office for circulation to clients. Similar Cat-Losses occurred in Southern Peninsula Malaysia in 2008 and 2011. With experience gained in 2006, the 2 Cat-Losses in 2008 and 2011 were handled and settled smoothly. Now act as one of the in-house Cat-Loss response team committee members given the vast experience. In 2006, handled a MYR60mil fire claim involving a lead-frame manufacturer. The said fire claim was regarded as the largest insurance claim in Melaka state’s history at that time. Provided the claimant with “Immediate Check List” after fire to follow up on recovery actions agreed with claimant on daily basis. Forensic and machinery experts were engaged to assist in claim investigation and loss mitigation. The claimant’s partially burnt factory resumed operation within 3 days. Also dealt with their Business Interruption claim.

During first 1 year of loss adjusting career, aspects learned were principles of insurance, claim investigations, preservation of evidence, loss mitigation, assessment of quantum based on terms and conditions of Policy, preparation of adjuster reports, etc. Types of loss handled during initial stage of loss adjusting career were mainly domestic claims. Promoted as Senior Adjuster and handled first large fire claim (MYR1.2mil) in 1999 with assistance from trainee adjusters. Various loss verification methods such as physical quantification, volumetric analysis, stock reconciliation, etc. were adopted in assessment of the large loss. Financial analysis (learned and practiced in banking industry before joining MSM) was also incorporated in the investigation of this large loss.Handled many loss of cash (armed robbery) claims involving banks, betting outlets and other money in transit claims. Majority of these claims were above MYR100,000.00. Assessment of quantum of loss was performed during first site investigation to prevent manipulation of information / documents. Also handled various claims involving Fidelity Guarantee Policy and adopted “on the spot loss” loss reconciliation approach.
