I started my apprenticeship when I was 16 for DAF trucks for vehicle maintenance and repair. During my apprenticeship I managed to win the apprentice of the year award on my third year. Continuing at DAF after my apprenticeship I soon got put on the breakdown van which was an excellent opportunity to gain more skills in the diagnostics side whilst being in different locations and all kinds of weathers. I have also had experience in being the night shift foreman at DAF which was a great experience managing the work we had to do and talking to clients about there vehicles repairs and prices of the work.I am currently in Antarctica with an 18 month wintering contract with the British Antarctic survey as a mobile plant mechanic at the Rothera research station. This is a little different as there is a large variety of vehicles here all the way from large Volvo loading shovels to skidoos and as I am in such a remote location parts are not always accessible so I am learning to repair or make parts to keep the vehicles going.
