I am passionate about rethinking digital transformation strategies to build social, political, technological, and economic systems that empower communities and embed equity and sustainability from the start.I am currently the Coordinator for Insight and Knowledge Development at Open North. My areas of expertise are government digital transformation, data governance, the responsible governance of smart city and AI technologies, and privacy regulations (for which I hold a CIPP/C certification). My work involves consulting on local governments' digital strategies, assessing AI and data governance frameworks, producing field-leading research, doing community and stakeholder engagement, conducting cross-project analysis to identify insights and trends, and building innovative services, tools, and knowledge sharing and translation products for in-house and external capacity building and learning. In addition, I am deeply involved in volunteer work to help develop more democratic and accountable systems of public oversight over the police acquisition and use of digital technologies. I have written and spoken publicly on the subject and continue to work and organize for a better future.I was born and raised in South Africa, spent many years living and studying in Europe, then moved to Canada to complete my Ph.D at Queen’s University. My doctoral research was on the societal impacts of emerging digital technologies, particularly with regards to digital surveillance and policing. Prior I received a Master’s Degree in philosophy and political science from the University of Zurich with a thesis on the geopolitical dimensions of corporate and national security surveillance.
