Thomas has been faculty at the The New York Open Center for over twenty years, teaching courses on meditation, esoteric yogic practice, and applied Indian Philosophy.

For thirteen years he served first as its Managing Director, then President/CEO, leaving the role in 2017. The New York Open Center has been, for over 34 years, New York City’s premier educational organization for programs and classes in the field of holistic learning and world culture, offering over 500 classes a year. As part of his role he helped to bring a number of professional trainings, such as: "Coaching For Transformation"; "Sound and Music Practitioner Training", "Meditation and Contemplative Studies Training"; "Building a Thriving Practice"; "The Art of Dying Institute", and much more.

A founding member of, and senior teacher at, Kripalu, he lived and worked there for almost twenty years, including a one-year period in India where Swami Kripalvandaji (lovingly called: “Kripalu”) did his spiritual practice. In India he studies the esoteric practices and teaching of yoga, and edited a book on yoga: Yoga the Ultimate Spiritual Path. At Kripalu in the US, Thomas (Shivanand) also held leadership roles in the areas of Education, Guest Services, Director of Legacy Kripalu Center in PA, etc. Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health is the largest center of its kind in North America with over 40,000 guests a year, and he continues to lead programs there, including New Year’s Spiritual Renewal Retreat.

From 2000-2002 he was director of the Ross Institute Center for Well-Being in East Hampton, NY. The center brought the best in wellness, spirituality, and global culture from the eastern, western and indigenous traditions to the Hamptons community. The center is a grand and gorgeous setting for learning and, along with the Ross School, hosted such presenters as Mehmet Oz MD, Thomas Moore, Stephen Spielberg, Spalding Gray, Houston Smith, Ram Dass, Quincy Jones, Billy Joel, Deepak Chopra MD, Andrew Weil, MD, Larry Dossey MD, Peter Mathiessen and many others.
