About Thomas Russell

I have loved machines my entire life, and I am proud to have found a career that allows me to design, build, and study machines in a variety of industries. I am currently an Associate in the Mechanical Engineering Practice at Exponent, where I use my background knowledge in tribology, lubrication, and machine design to support to our clients with failure investigations, component analysis, custom test fixture design, and machinery safety. Prior to joining Exponent, I was a Ph.D. student in the Mechanical Engineering Tribology Laboratory at Purdue University, where I built and operated test stands for the evaluation of bearings, gears, and other critical machine components and developed simulations for lubricant flow and bearing behavior.

Performed static, large deflection, non-linear, and fatigue analyses in ANSYS on a pedal assembly for the ride-on fairway mower. Worked with the design engineer to eliminate unnecessary weldments in the assembly, reducing the production cost of the product while maintaining the structural integrity of the mechanism. Was also responsible for the development of a model for the front caster wheels of the 'Tango' autonomous lawnmower. Used LMS Virtual.Lab to create a model that could predict the reaction forces and torques on drive wheels of the Tango when driving over a bump. Using this model, I then designed and verified a wheel that allows the mower to easily traverse sidewalks and small obstacles without setting off the large bump detection sensors onboard. Show less
