Research Assistant: The Impact Of Seasonal Burning On Fossorial Reptiles
Tembe Elephant Park, South Africa
As a research assistant at Tembe Elephant park, I was primarily assisting with a study which investigated, how seasonal burning impacts fossorial reptiles. My role allowed me to gain a greater understanding of survey methods including the use of funnel traps and bucket traps. I was able to handle various species of snake as well as amphibians which were caught as bi-catch. All species were weighed and measured before being released. As well as this I was able to assist with routine Elephant monitoring as well as monitoring of Lion and African wild dogs, including being part of Wild dog call ups. By assisting at Tembe, I was able to partake in field research on a big 5 reserve and gain extensive knowledge and identification of reptiles and Amphibians in this region of South Africa, as well as learning more about the conservation issues in the area.
