Director of the Murder Accountability Project, a nonprofit group to improve both the public's understanding of the growing problem of unsolved homicides in the United States and to improve the quality of information local and state authorities report to the U.S. Justice Department and to the general public about homicides and unsolved homicides. The Murder Accountability Project has assembled the nation's most complete database of homicides and unsolved homicides, including details about more than 39,000 murders never reported to the FBI. We have also developed an algorithm that can spot unsolved cases with an elevated probability of being the work of uncaught serial killers. This project is an outgrowth of a national reporting project called "Murder Mysteries" which I led while director of database research at the Scripps Howard News Service. Authorities in Indiana and Ohio opened new investigations after they agreed serial murder was the likely explanation for a series of unsolved strangulations in their communities. While at Scripps Howard, I also conducted a study of federal infant death records that prompted a national conference to discuss misuse of the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome diagnosis. The project -- "Saving Babies: Exposing Sudden Infant Death" -- prompted reform legislation by former U.S. Senator Barack Obama and new initiatives by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Reform efforts took seven years, culminating in passage of the Sudden Unexpected Death Data Enhancement and Awareness Act of 2014.As co-founder of the Scripps Survey Research Center at Ohio University, I have designed, supervised, analyzed and written about the results of 45 national polls, looking at attitudes about religion, politics, social trends and government. Our study on conspiracy theories found that a third of Americans believe federal officials had advanced knowledge of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, prompting an official denial by the U.S. State Department.
