Through working one-on-one with 33 doctors, each with different clinical styles, I was given a clear and realistic picture of being a physician. The challenges of diverse and non-compliant patients, long-hours, and paperwork, were balanced with successful treatments and rewarding moments with patients. I thrived engaging with patients in difficult conversations and relaying updates. I learned about the resources of specialists, nurses, technicians, and drugs physicians have in benign situations and code-blue emergencies. As my curiosity into the medical sciences grew, so did the confirmation that I want to be a doctor and that I am capable to handle the challenges of a physician.

The William Sansum Diabetes Center is a non-profit devoted to innovative research endeavors with the goal of improving the lives of patients affected by diabetes. I conducted the industry sponsored trial evaluating Abbott’s Libre sensor by testing blood samples on YSI 2300 Stat Analyzers, screening and scheduling subjects, and training staff. In our Artificial Pancreas investigator initiated trials I recruited subjects and monitored the closed-loop systems for patient safety and effectiveness. I learned how my attention to detail and effective communication can directly and indirectly benefit patients. Working with medical companies taught me to prioritize patients.First being hired on as a lab assistant, I was promoted to a position as a clinical research assistant. In this role I developed projects, giving me confidence in organizational leadership and development. In creating an idea for a long-term internship proposal and presenting it to the leadership board, I learned about organizational structure and funding. Even though that project did not advance, it enabled me to create and foster a partnership between Westmont College and WSDC in several following projects. Understanding differing organizational perspectives will aid me in developing future partnerships beneficial to the patients. These experiences motivate me to conduct patient centered clinical research, and to develop useful tools for patients and providers.In addition to the aforementioned projects, I was a co-author on a publication accepted by Diabetes Care on approaches to glycemic treatment as recommended by Diabetes Care 2015 Guidelines. I presented the course of this project to fellow staff members and organizational leaders, and it served as a platform for encouragement and discussion.

I moved to Arusha, Tanzania (Africa) to volunteer my time assisting Wild Hope International in which ever ways were necessary. The majority of my efforts were focused on a partnered, locally originated soccer academy. Within that academy I guided aiding volunteer groups, taught English to students 8-15 years of age, lead a co-teacher, and encouraged community development. Occasionally I lead soccer practices. The culture requires you to be very spontaneous and to roll through the many mishaps and schedule changes.Amidst miscellaneous tasks in Tanzania, a few main emphases were speaking Swahili (gaining 70% fluency), leading bible devotions, and starting an entrepreneurial project making satchels out of recycled concrete bags, rubber and coke bottles. Unfortunately my departure came before the project could pick up enough speed to be sustained in my absence.

Parton and Edward subcontracts almost all of their construction work. My role was to assist the super superintendent in any tasks deeming necessary. This included tasks ranging from scheduling subcontractors and plan analysis to picking up trash on site and driving a dump truck. Day to day I would shadow the superintendent, run errands, lock up the site, quality control, and manage subcontractors. This is another role requiring many hats, most of them supervisory, and all of them required a keen eye and good people skills. Other random tasks included sketches, traffic control, shipment organizing, trench digging, and guiding resident walk-throughs.

Working as a resident assistant requires many hats to be worn. The best alternative name for this job would be community facilitator. I worked with a team of nine other resident assistants, and attended schedule and unscheduled meetings which were usually lead by our leader, the resident director. Some of my official responsibilities included upholding the campus life policy, sustaining civility amongst the residents, emergency response (medical and natural disaster), and creating, coordinating, and hosting of activities within the dorm and my particular section. The little details of the job, often the unofficial responsibilities, were the most important and where learned skills were most applicable. Amidst one-on-one, private, and communal conversations I expressed conflict resolution skills, communication and public speaking skills, and counseling skills. In my section, I didn't just guide my residence, I dwelt with them amidst their life as first year college students. My personal relationship with them was often times the grease that kept us functioning together like a well oiled machine.Throughout the year, with the exception of holiday breaks, I was on the clock twenty-four hours a day to serve my residence in their needs, amidst juggling my rigorous senior year schedule. Spontaneous events that elapsed during my year were two emergency evacuations due to brush fires, an emergency room visit, and frequent conversations full of counsel, joy, laughter, advice, and exploration.

I installed projectors, projector mounts, screens speakers, and sound racks and pulled cable. Routine items included cleaning sites and organizing our warehouse. Occasionally I helped set up and break down equipment from events.

I had the opportunity to assist my supervising attorney in the hearing of a very very odd six week murder trial. My typical duties included answering client phone calls, calling clients and witnesses, delivering case loads, and responding to prison letters. Some unique experiences I had included: Assisting the reconstruction of a 25 year old crime scene; Writing of a motion to discover police records for fabricating evidence and charges; Compilation of a quarterly felony caseload report. One useful skill I developed and practiced was counseling and communication through interactions with clients. I enjoyed my time and am grateful for the privilege to serve under one of the city's best attorneys, William Maas.
