I have run the gamut from IT generalist to network manager of a multi-facility corporate infrastructure to web programmer to security specialist. And, most recently, have been able to pursue all those avenues all at once. Specialization is great until it gets mundane; I would fail miserably at being only an email server administrator. But let me develop anti spam rules, control server updates, write code, direct the use of IT with business plans, design network structure, administer databases and educate with humor, tolerance and a great attitude along the way - well, it doesn't get any better than that. Multi-tasking? Sure. ADD? Most likely. Curious? Absolutely. Dedicated? You know it. But it is fun and if one doesn't enjoy the job then one should change vocations at once.Specialties: Network security, web programming (php, javascript, perl), database administration (Oracle, MySQL), server administration (Linux, Solaris, Windows). The management of technical people spread out over a disparate geographic area. I even have retained some knowledge of help desk support even though IT folk try to forget that part of their existence as quickly as possible!
