Hi, and thank you for stopping by my profile. Please allow me to share a little about myself:My approach to teaching geology utilizes innovative pedagogy, flexibility in course design, and a personalized approach to teaching. _______ With over twenty-eight years of full-time experience in Higher Ed teaching, I’ve written (from scratch) lecture/lab courses in Earth Science, Physical Geology, and Historical Geology and delivered them in multimodal formats._______Once a fierce critic of online teaching, I’m now a staunch advocate—particularly for what may be the Holy Grail in digital education: authentic, high-quality lecture/lab science courses. I believe that digital learning can be comparable (and superior in several respects) to face-to-face learning environments, and that the instructional framework of digital learning presents significant advantages for students, instructors, and institutions.I’ve developed and use my own innovative student-centered learning systems in geology, utilizing frequent student feedback to continuously improve them.Students buy **NO** books or kits to take any of my online courses._______I have a strong commitment to student achievement, with demonstrated excellence in teaching in the following areas:* Expertise in adaptive tailoring of teaching methodologies* Outstanding track record of enthusiastic and innovative course development* Continuous commitment to improving instructional materials* Student-centered approach to developing and building “low and no additional cost to student” learning systems* Enthusiastic teaching evaluations from students _______Some of my passions and interests in my subject discipline are:* How Earth simultaneously works as a geological machine and an ecological substrate* How organisms become fossils (and why the vast majority of organisms vanish without a trace)* How fossil organisms once interacted with each other and their environment* The roles that tectonic, biological, and environmental settings play in the origination and diversification of fossil groups_______In my teaching career I’m passionate about:*Teaching for understanding and visualizing processes in physical geology* Analytical and critical thinking within integrated science lecture and lab experiences* Innovative uses of delivery technologies and evaluative methods for online learning* How persistent and iterative changes in course materials and construction lead to major pedagogical innovations* Philosophies and strategies leading to more welcoming and barrier-free learning environments
