CurrentA Vietnamese immigrant and filmmaker in the US, Thy is drawn to the politics of social and sexual identity. With film, he wishes to explore and confront the issues therein. He sees film as not just entertainment but a reflection of humanity and society as a whole. Since moving to LA in 2007 to pursue a career in film, Thy has worked in advertising for Big Brother and the James Corden Show while developing his screenplays into feature films. In 2020, Thy’s short film, SummerWinterSummer, as a writer and director became an official selection at CAAMFest, Vancouver Queer Film Fest, and Viet Film Fest where it was nominated as Best Short. In early 2023, Thy received the honor of becoming a member of Viet Film Fest’s Curatorial Committee. Currently, Thy is developing his SWS short into a feature film — about a young graphics designer as he navigates a recent heartbreak, loneliness, and racism against Asian men within the LGBTQ+ community. Thy’s credits as an editor include Anne-Christine Caro’s award winning short Merci Beaucoup Bradley Cooper, a 2013 Cannes Court Métrage Selection (12mins), Luca Severi’s feature documentary Alberto Burri and Piero della Francesca:The Two Revolutions, which aired on the Italian network Sky Arte (85mins), Alessio Giambatista’s feature comedy Better Days (87 mins), Brian McGuire’s feature comedy Prevertere (2015, 87 mins), and music videos for CC Sheffield, Andy Clockwise, and Jameson Burt. Thy has also worked on a variety of independent projects as a post production assistant on the feature drama Half-Life (Sundance Selection, 2008) directed by Jennifer Phang (106mins), and The Rambler (Sundance Selection, 2012) starring Durmot Mulroney (98mins). On Tolmer Almagor’s 2012 feature, 9 Full Moons starring Amy Seimetz, Thy worked a data manager. On Georgia Archer’s Barbershop Punk, a documentary that examines the necessity of Net Neutrality on the internet, Thy worked as an assistant editor (76mins).
