You could say I'm a dreamer. Before graduating from Penn State with a degree in journalism, I dreamt of penning novels from corner coffee shops in NYC. (Don't worry, this dream is still alive. Just not in NYC.) I quickly realized that novel-writing wouldn't pay the bills right away, so I launched my career as a small-town reporter in rural Pennsylvania. I gravitated toward stories that demonstrated the strength and resiliency of the human spirit, but I enjoyed the light-hearted tales of local superheroes, too. (Yes, I wrote about my town’s friendly neighborhood Spiderman. I later learned from my Spidey-loving partner that it’s Spider-Man, not Spiderman, and I'd like to formally apologize to all the Marvel fans out there.)Between the lines of every news story, another dream developed: teaching. I moved to Memphis, TN to earn my Master of Urban Education and taught third grade for three years. Although I enjoyed the planning, the creativity, and the opportunity to encourage and inspire young minds, I have to admit I wasn't as successful at "closing the achievement gap" as I would have liked to be. Teaching was arguably the hardest job I've ever had, and I continue to be an advocate for supporting educators and public education. In 2017, I returned to communications, this time at Virginia Tech, where I used storytelling to connect with undergraduate students as they navigated feelings of fear, insecurity, and uncertainty. It felt like a perfect meld of my strengths and interests! Some of my favorite pieces focused on underrepresented student success, social justice work, and health education. When I relocated to North Carolina to be closer to my partner, I joined a fully-remote boutique communications firm where I have the opportunity to collaborate with nonprofits focusing on a range of issues, from environmental conservation to early childhood education to community economic development. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, listening to true crime podcasts (#murderino), blogging, hiking, walking my best four-legged friend, Squirt, and adventuring with my husband.
