Profile bio

About Tiger Schmittendorf

I have broad experience in a wide variety of fields and industries as I've spent 40 years in fire and emergency services, worked for 15 years in engineering, sales, marketing and management; and was blessed to make my career in the fire service for 20+ years. I've had tremendously rewarding and even life-changing experiences in all of these fields, most of which are documented in the stories that have been writing themselves for the past 50+ years. The three "selling" points I share at the top of my resume are:-Proven leader in creating positive solutions to challenges of the emergency services community-Quadrupled training participation for county-wide fire services bureau-Multi-million dollar company more than doubled in size during my employmentBut to summarize that even further, my goal has always been to be recognized as a "successful leader helping others solve problems by utilizing my vast emergency services experience, creative and organizational talent, technical competence and clear communication skills."While that sounds like a mouth-full --- I firmly believe that my greatest success, and thus my personal satisfaction, comes simply from helping others to be successful. I try to carry a servant attitude in all that I do and focus every day on training my replacement, whoever that may be and in whichever arena I play.In 2007 I wrote: "From the Xbox to the Box Alarm: Understanding and Engaging Today's Firefighters" (http://www.tigerschmittendorf.com/xbox-live/), an article that changed the focus away from generational differences and started to change our mindset toward exploring opportunities to connect the demographic divide. I’ve had the opportunity to share this game-changing conversation of the same title with thousands across the country in the emergency services community and a variety of other industries under the title: “Cracking the Code: An offline conversation about connecting with an online generation.”Specialties: Recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters; marketing, grant writing, emergency management; organizational leadership; incident command, operations and logistics; public speaking, key notes, storytelling, having conversations with other passionate people.

Listed skills include Emergency Services, Emergency Management, Firefighting, Public Safety, and 46 others.

Vice President Strategic Recruitment & Retention Services

Current

Richmond, Virginia Area

As VP of Strategic Services, I'm focused on helping Fire/EMS Departments, industry associations and non-profits expand their recruitment and retention footprint by leveraging the latest best practices, strategies and technology platforms. With 15 years of experience in engineering, sales and marketing management as a base for customer service -- I look forward to using my 40+ years of emergency services experience, and specifically my 30+ years of recruitment and retention experience, to assist volunteer fire departments, EMS squads and other non-profits in reaching their membership and service delivery goals.I’m very excited to be partnering with my longtime friends who have involved me in every venture - and adventure - along the way. This partnership fulfills a vision I started on my own more than 20 years ago but have always been limited by being a one-man band. Now with the bench strength of our First Arriving team, we can leverage our experience and expertise to truly serve as “Mutual Aid for Marketing Your Fire/EMS Department.”I’ve long believed that my greatest success comes only through helping others be successful. I look forward to meeting and helping so many more good folks sustain and succeed with their recruitment and retention efforts, and so much more. I’m blessed to be able to continue to do what I love: serving others.Let me know how I can be of assistance to you and your organization. And for those of you keeping score at home, I’ll still be involved in all the other rewarding projects I always have been, just not that retirement thing so much!

Deputy Fire Coordinator

Erie County Department Of Homeland Security & Emergency Services

Buffalo Ny

I was responsible for coordinating the recruitment, training and mutual aid operations for 97 fire departments and 6,000+ firefighters and first responders in our 1,200 sq. mi. county. This includes managing three live fire training facilities and supervision of almost 50 fire instructors in delivering more than 1,200 training events each year.My duties include grant writing, recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters; web, social media and communications management; graphics design, public information and emergency management command staff. We're proud of our successes in recruiting 500-600 new volunteers every year, bucking the national trend of a decline in volunteerism. While that success is not by chance given the combined efforts of our department and our local volunteer fire departments, we think it speaks most highly of our community that hundreds each year would raise their right hand and commit to "I will be the one to serve."
