Expertise in food security, sustainability, climate change, ecology; systemic and interacting risks. Currently Distinguished Fellow at Chatham House, Environment and Society Centre, working on range of projects about how environmental risks interact with human systems. Formerly, Dean for Strategic Research Initiatives at the University of Leeds, and Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Chatham House (2016-2019). Before that (2011-16) worked 80% time for the UK's Global Food Security programme, as its "Champion". GFS is a partnership of the UK's public bodies with an interest in food (government departments, Scottish and Welsh governments, and research councils). My role was to lead the programme, undertake foresighting and horizon scanning processes, identify important knowledge gaps, facilitate knowledge transfer to policy, industry and civil society, and generate research funds to address the knowledge gaps. I also worked with the European Commission and the G20 MACS ("meeting of agricultural chief scientists" process).Prior to GFS, I was head of department and research dean in biology at Leeds. I have worked extensively with the agricultural and food industries. I have been a Global Agenda Steward, and member of the Global Futures Council on Food Security and Agriculture for the World Economic Forum. I have represented the UK's Royal Society on a project spanning national academies around the world on food security. I am an honorary Fellow of the UK's Society for the Environment for my work on sustainable food security. I am an IPCC author on the 2019 report on food, land and climate.
