Interested in helping new medical technologies develop into marketed products.Founded the WPI Bioengineering Institute in 2002 and built it into an important source of medical device business connections for early stage companies and ideas. Was greatly interested in how academics, industry, and government can partner for economic development in life sciences.Prior to joining WPI, spent 8 years in Washington, DC managing major national health research programs worth millions of dollars for the US Department of Veterans Affairs. This work placed me at the interface of public policy and science.In 1985 recruited to conduct and manage human biomedical research for the US Environmemntal Protections Agency, eventually rising to Chief of the Clinical Research Branch. Research was internationally recognized for its impact on our understanding of the health effects of air pollution. Appealed to a long-term interest in the relationship between the results of human health research and the establishment public policy.In 1978, after receiving Ph.D. in physics, conducted post-doctoral human health research and eventually became Res. Assist. Prof. at University of Illinois School of Medicine.
