I am a broadly trained atmospheric scientist and mechanical engineer with 20+ years of experience, spanning the initial design of mechanical/optical/electrical systems through final product commercialization. I have a proven track record of winning federal research and development contracts. I am especially interested in using exploratory R&D to expand business into new areas. I enjoy getting my hands dirty (as a former furniture maker and carpenter), fabricating prototypes and discussing ideas with the machinists, technicians and test engineers who bring our ideas to life. I have used finite element analysis to refine prototypes, deployed instruments on a dozen scientific missions (ground, tower and aircraft platforms), mentored junior engineers/scientists and authored or co-authored more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers. I foster direct, open communication and emotional maturity within teams that I lead. As Director of Aerosol Research and Development at OHD, I lead all science and engineering related to our AeroFit, a condensation nuclei counter-based respirator fit tester used by industrial hygienists to help ensure the safety of users of a broad array of respirators.During my time as Senior Scientist at Aerosol Devices, Inc. in Fort Collins, CO, I led efforts (as Principal Investigator) on three separate government grants (NIH, DOD, DHS) developing new technologies for sampling and detecting airborne SARS-CoV-2.During my postdoc at NOAA, I designed, built, deployed and patented a novel instrument (an open-path cavity ringdown spectrometer) for measuring the amount of sunlight reflected/absorbed by microscopic particles in the atmosphere. As Director of Engineering at Handix Scientific, I commercialized this instrument and others. After my former company's (GEO2) intellectual property was acquired by Corning, Inc. in 2009, I shifted from developing devices to mitigate air pollution (DPFs) to doing applied research in air pollution science and policy. In 2012 I completed my Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University's Engineering and Public Policy Department and the Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies. My research, comprising a multi-year field campaign with the California Air Resources Board, focused on providing empirical data to improve our current understanding of the transformation of gaseous emissions from on- and off-road engines into fine particulate matter in the atmosphere. My work is motivated by a desire to provide actionable, policy-relevant recommendations.
