Camellia Remediation Project ($105M)Stage 1 Early Works - Parramatta Light RailPortion 1 & 2 As part of the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 Project, the site for the future light rail Stabling and Maintenance Facility (SaMF) at Camellia, was required to be remediated to address chemical contamination resulting from the land's historical industrial use. The remediation approach included the construction of hydraulic barrier around the perimeter and an engineered capping system and a containment cell. Ground improvement was required through the contaminated materials to facilitate the SaMF construction. Tim led the team as Project Manager which delivered on:• Construction of over 1.0km of low permeability soil bentonite cut-off wall • Excavation of over 65,000m3 of contaminated material, requiring stockpiling, waste classification and offsite disposal to a licensed landfill or placed in the on-site containment cell,• Over 4,000 CFA piles constructed over a complex pilling platform that varied in height and staging requirements to meet capping system constraints.• Over 218,000m2 of liner materials placed to form the capping system, comprising of geocomposite and geosynthetic clay lining products;• Approximately 35,000 tonnes of aggregate imported and placed to form the capillary break layer.• Approximately 28,000 tonnes of bearing soil imported to form an impermeable layer over the capillary break and to provide a smooth surface for the placement of an impermeable clay liner;• Over 250,000 tonnes of Sydney sandstone imported, placed, and compacted on the site to finish levels. Sandstone was sourced from other Sydney based infrastructure projects due to its suitability for re-use on the site as an engineered product. • Inclusion of an on-site containment cell which holds over 14,500m3 of re-directed site won contaminated spoil originally destined for offsite disposal to a landfill.• Project maintained a zero Lost Time Injury rate.

Camellia Remediation ProjectStage 1 Early Works - Parramatta Light Rail

A legacy impact of the Mortlake Gas Works left large areas of sediments within Kendall Bay with contamination from hydrocarbons posing potential human health and ecological risk as well as aesthetic impacts.Tim was responsible for managing and executing on the design and implementation of the Kendall Bay Sediments Remediation Trial Works which involved trialling the in-situ stabilisation (ISS) of sediments within Kendall Bay.The ISS Trial required the mobilisation of various plant and equipment including a barge mounted batch plant and in-situ injection excavator from White Bay to the shallow marine environment of Kendall Bay.

Team lead delivering on the decommissioning of the PAD facility at the former CFA training campus, Fiskville. Tim’s Responsibilities included;» Manage client/contractor interface.» Lead and manage the project team to ensure project deliverables are met.» Manage and report on Project Finances» Management of subcontractors (City Circle demolition) for the demolition of major CFA fire training infrastructure and buildings.

Part of the team delivering on Ventia’s Joint Venture Partnership with SUEZ to design and deliver a Soil Processing Facility in Dandenong South, Victoria. During this time, tender support was also provided on some key tenders. Responsibilities included;» Development of functional specifications for various components of the soil processing facility;» Development of tender packages for the soil processing facility; » Tender support for key bids -Involvement included development of methodologies, project scheduling and pricing.

Engaging with the Commonwealth Government, Ventia performed extensive remediation across several sites of the Cox Peninsula, NT. The remediation of the land will facilitate the progression of the long running Indigenous land claim (Kenbi Land Claim). Responsible for managing the following packages and works:» Site establishment infrastructure (site offices and septic systems) » Civil Infrastructure (DTD Plant Footings, Tapa Bay Bore Transfer Station)» Major Demolition two large redundant buildings.» Bulk Earthworks (Excavation of ~450m3 of lead impacted soil, ~5000m3 of asbestos impacted soil and ~1600m3 of OCP/PCB impacted soil) and associated backfill.» Treatment of Lead impacted waste using Ventia’s track mounted soil recycler.» Removal of over 10,000 lineal meters of underground services

Under contract with RailCorp, Ventia is performing the major remediation works on a suburban site adjacent to six of Sydney Trains’ active lines. Tim is responsible for overseeing works which include:» Establishment of remediation facilities (negative pressure enclosure, retaining walls and water treatment plant and emission control system);» Heritage restoration works on one of NSW’s last remaining Gasholder structures.» Excavation, treatment and disposal of 17,000m3 of contaminated materials including validation requirements for the site;» Backfilling and landscaping of the remediated site;

Thiess undertook several major packages of work at Elizabeth Quay on behalf of the managing contractor, Leighton Broad. Elizabeth Quay will re-establish the city's historic links with the Swan River by creating a magnificent precinct featuring a 2.7 hectare inlet surrounded by a split level promenade, shops, cafes, restaurants and other exciting entertainment venues. Tim was responsible for:» Construction of limestone/granite bund; 400m combined total length;» Reclamation of two islands with a combined area of 16,000m2 forming part of the permanent Elizabeth Quay works involving displacement/mechanical removal of 16,000 m3 unstable swan river alluvium followed by placement and compaction of 74,000 tonnes limestone; and» Construction of pilling platforms required as forward works for the diaphragm wall contractor.» Installation of sheet pile walls including in river pilling works to aid removal of contaminated soils and construction of a reclaimed bund within the Swan River.» Bulk earthworks to form promenades and road reserves as part of the public space.» Excavation, tracking and disposal of over 65,000m3 of hydrocarbon and acid sulphate affected materials and overburden material.» Demolition and disposal of 1000 lineal meters of diaphragm wall

Thiess was commissioned by Energex to remediate the old Toowoomba Gasworks site for sale and redevelopment. The heavily contaminated site posed challenges, including the demolition of structures containing asbestos, the need to salvage recyclable materials, the removal of 100,000 tonnes of contaminated soil. Tim was responsible for:» Excavation and disposal of 100,000 tonnes of contaminated waste including validation requirements for the site;» Backfill and landscaping of the remediated site; and» Reinstatement of the Chalk Drive car park.

Thiess joined Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), Parsons Brinckerhoff and Hyder Consulting in an alliance to construct the 13-kilometre eastern section of the Hunter Expressway project. Traversing the rugged Sugarloaf Range in NSW, the team navigated undulating, environmentally-sensitive forest terrain, water courses, and areas of historical mining activity and cultural heritage to complete one of the largest and most complex projects in the State’s history.The scope included construction of two major grade separated interchanges, light and heavy vehicle rest areas, three twin-viaduct bridges, 23 additional bridges and mine subsidence foundation treatment.Tim’s role covered:» Post stressing and precast erection engineer for 564 segments of the balanced cantilever viaducts over the Sugarloaf ranges; and» Roads finishing works including detailed earthworks, re-vegetation and installation of fauna fencing and signage over the 13km alignment.
