Exercise Antarctic Endurance 2016 was a joint Royal Navy and Royal Marines expedition and research project to mark 100 years since Shackleton's return from the Antarctic. Starting in the Falklands in January 2016, the expedition traced Shackleton's route from Antarctica - out of the Weddell Sea to Elephant Island, then to South Georgia, trekking across the island and finally returning to the Falkland Islands. The Southern Ocean, with no landmass to slow the almost constant gale force winds and strong currents, can defeat even the most experienced yachtsman, and the terrain of South Georgia is snow-covered, windswept and full of crevasses. This expedition tested the team to the limit, both mentally and physically, and in doing so, developed in them the Royal Navy's Core Values: Courage, Commitment, Discipline, Respect, Integrity and Loyalty. This was a 2-year research project, standing on the shoulders of Shackleton to gain an insight into team dynamics. From its start in 2014, it used the selection, training and participation in the 6-week sailing and mountaineering expedition to the Weddell Sea and South Georgia to study team behaviours and the impact of such life changing experiences on individuals. Those taking part were all members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, with at least half of them within the first 5 years of their careers. Show less
