Background:The Music Reporting Services team provides music data capture, processing, management and analytics services to PPL’s UK and International businesses. Since the beginning of 2014 these services have been productised to offer other Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) the opportunity to outsource these functions to PPL, enabling them to focus on local licensing and member management. My role:I am responsible for leading a department of 20 FTEs; ensuring operational success, through the delivery of continual improvement and innovation. The role owns operational relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers. Externally these include CMOs utilising Business Services; major music users, including broadcasters and music service providers, such as in-store music suppliers; and 3rd party data service providers, including audio recognition and data processing partners.Key achievements:Architecting a suite of new business service offerings; Successfully selling the services to 3 organisations in first 3 months of launch, while building a pipeline of future opportunities; Overseeing the implementation of these services, while building an operational delivery capability;Driving continued efficiency and productivity improvement, particularly through the enhancement of core processes and systems; Overseeing continual improvement in the quality and accuracy of Music Reporting Services, enabling the team to continue to deliver more than ever before; andLeading the identification and delivery of joint working initiatives with PRS for Music.

My role:I was seconded into the role of Head of International, where I led the design and delivery of a change programme to integrate the maturing operational capabilities of the department into the wider business. This enabled the department to focus on account management, placing it on a firm platform to build upon and deliver its next phase of growth.Key achievements:Led a department assessment to identify its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats;Used findings to lead the design and delivery of a department restructure to integrate operational capabilities into the UK business, improving operational effectiveness and scalability, while allowing the core team to focus on account management;Integrated the international music data processing function into my Music Reporting Team, thus forming Music Reporting Services, and the International Repertoire and Member data processing functions with the UK Repertoire and Member Data team; Delivered significant improvements to financial planning, budgeting and forecasting;Delivered significant improvements to operational planning, tracking, measurement and reporting and communications;Increased data processing rates and data quality, enabling PPL to make its largest number and volume of claims in its history; Translated operational performance improvements into strong financial numbers in-line with or in excess of forecast; andDefined the departments’ revenue growth strategy.

My role:I joined PPL as part of the “Money-Out” Business Transformation Programme. I led two key business work streams, covering the Music Reporting and Distribution departments, and was responsible for delivering solutions to deliver music data matching, intellectual property rights management, royalty calculations and payments, data warehousing and reporting. Following delivery of the transformation programme I took on operational responsibility for Distribution Policy, and built a new team to lead the design and development of policies to ensure revenues collected were distributed fairly and equitably to recording rights holders and performers.Key achievements:Led the design and delivery of a bespoke system to process music usage data to enable its use in royalty calculations and revenue distributions;Led the design, procurement and delivery of a product to manage Record Company and Performer Worldwide Rights;Led the design, procurement and delivery of a product to manage complex royalty calculations and revenue distributions;Delivered all solutions on time, to budget and exceeding expectation;Led the redesign and implementation of new business processes and reporting;Oversaw the smooth transition of operations to new systems, enabling payments to be made to members on time, more accurately and transparently than ever before; Oversaw restructures of the Music Reporting and Distribution departments, enabling resource freed up through automation and efficiency improvement to be refocused on higher value data analysis, insights, and management;Delivered incremental improvements to reporting;Oversaw the delivery of PPLs first data warehouse to improve analysis of distribution calculations;Led the engagement with key licensees and product vendors to improve the quality and quantity of used music reported; andDelivered year on year improvements in the volume of music data processed, the accuracy of distribution policies, calculations and payments.
