In the early 2000s, the energy industry was on the cusp of transformation. IoT-driven insights and real-time energy management were emerging, and I had the privilege of co-founding Power Star alongside Gert Kruger, with a shared vision to innovate in this space.As co-founders, we faced the challenge of turning a small company into a leader in energy measurement and management solutions. Our goal was clear: to empower businesses with the tools to optimise energy use and drive sustainable growth. We pioneered mobile data loggers for electricity measurement in South Africa, giving our clients real-time data to make informed decisions and reduce costs.As the market evolved, we recognised the need to adapt. This led to the rebranding of Power Star as Augos, reflecting our expanded capabilities and commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology. We broadened our solutions, incorporating IoT and advanced analytics to offer deeper insights and greater control over energy use, extending beyond electricity to water, gas, and environmental monitoring.Today, Augos is a global leader in energy management, known for innovative solutions that optimise efficiency and empower sustainability. In 2003, I was drawn to the challenges within the South African property market. Buyers often had to navigate multiple estate agents to access the full range of property listings in a suburb, which made the process cumbersome and time-consuming. I believed there had to be a simpler way.This led to the creation of Property I, a concept designed to make property searches more accessible. We established property cafés in key retail locations like Canal Walk, Tyger Valley, and Brooklyn Mall. These cafés provided a relaxed environment where customers could browse property listings, print reports, enjoy a coffee, and contact agents directly, all without the need to engage with multiple agents.The concept gained traction, and soon we caught the attention of Paul Harris, Chairman of Firstrand. Through FNB Home Loans, the bank purchased a 50% stake in Property I. This partnership allowed us to pivot to a transaction-based revenue model, with the goal of helping buyers secure home loans more easily.However, the timing was challenging. The introduction of the National Credit Act and the global sub-prime mortgage crisis significantly impacted the property market. Despite our efforts, these factors led to the closure of Property I.While it was a difficult period, it also marked the beginning of a new chapter. Around the same time, South Africa began experiencing load shedding, and I saw an opportunity to pivot towards energy solutions. This led to the founding of Power-Star, where we initially provided generators during a critical period of energy uncertainty. Over time, this venture evolved into Augos, where we now focus on energy measurement and management solutions.Looking back, I’m grateful for the journey. From simplifying property searches to tackling energy challenges, each step has been a learning experience, shaping the path to where we are today with Augos.
