I qualified as a solicitor and joined what was then Gardner and Croft in 1984, having graduated with an LLB from Cardiff University three years previously. For several years after qualifying I was an advocate in the Magistrates and Crown Courts in Kent and I also represented road haulage clients at Public Inquiries.Since 2000, however, I have practised almost exclusively as a property lawyer, advising hundreds of clients in residential and commercial property transactions. I advise clients on all aspects of residential property including buying and selling flats and houses, mortgages, deeds of variation of rights and covenants, equity release, and lease extensions. My commercial experience includes advising clients with the purchase, sale and commercial letting of shops, offices, industrial units, land for development and agricultural property. I have several clients who have commercial and mixed property portfolios for letting. I have also advised on the sale and purchase of small businesses.I was the Managing Partner of Gardner Croft LLP from 2017 until we merged with Boys & Maughan LLP at the beginning of May 2023. I am now a partner and member of the commercial team dealing with commercial property transactions of all types and the sale and purchase of SME's. I also act for residents' associations which share ownership of common land.After nearly 40 years at the former Gardner Croft offices in Castle Street, Canterbury, in January 2024 I moved to the established Boys & Maughan offices in St Georges Place, Canterbury to be with the majority of the commercial team. Usually, I also spend one day a week with the commercial team at Boys & Maughan's main office in Hawley Street, Margate. InterestsOutside the office, I spend time racing sailboats; everything from dinghies to cruiser-racers at home and abroad. I am also involved in race management, often officiating at open meetings and regional and national championships. I am a vice president of Canterbury Hockey Club and a long time supporter of Canterbury Junior Hockey Club. I sing (once a year) with a local Choral Society and I am Chair of the UK Wayfarer Association (one of the most successful all round dinghy designs of the last 60 years which is raced and cruised in many countries in Europe and beyond). Sometimes I find time to cut the grass at home!
