The job description for a Bell Labs Distinguished Member of Technical Staff is "figure out what needs to be done and do it". I was in the same role for many years. The names of the organization changed over time (Quest, Software Technology Center, CIO, etc.), but the function remained the same. My organization straddled research and development, bringing the great ideas from research into the real world of development in a way that it can be absorbed and leveraged. I often embed with teams and have a stake in the successful outcome. I was responsible for helping implement the agile transformation across Alcatel-Lucent. I was one of a very small number of internal agile coaches charged with transforming our business units. I spent most of my time on the road working at our sites around the world. My immediate manager was seven time zones away, so I was largely autonomous, and have been for decades. A typical engagement is from one to nine months long, involving everything needed for a successful transformation: training, organizational transformations, hands-on workshops. Everything from soup to nuts. I was responsible for the successful transformation of the entire organization, often hundreds or thousands of people. This often involves reorgs and changing job descriptions. As I had no direct authority I have learned lots of soft skills for managing people that I found particularly effective. As a result of that model I am constantly exposed to new ideas and tools, and have learned more things than I can remember. I am confident that whatever challenge is before me I can master it.
