About Tim Davey
I have always been into software - I started aged 8 using Algol on the Hatfield Polytechnic (now University of Hertfordshire) Mainframe, dialling in from home on a 300 Baud Modem! By the time I had left University I had built my own Home Computer including my own version of DOS, programmed on many different CPUs in Assembly and various high-level languages (C, Pascal, Forth, Algol, Fortran, etc).Professionally, I started as a Hardware Engineer at GEC-Marconi after Graduation, but left to become a contractor after 4 years. My first contract was as a Hardware Designer for IGE Medical Systems working on Medical Imaging Systems. I was diverted to assist the software department and when it was time to move on I started to look for software contracts. My first was with Vitec (then named Drake), followed by a second stint at IGEMS (for software), followed by BNR (Nortel at Harlow) where I was working on a Passive Optical Network - a mixture of hardware design (fibre optic transceivers, FPGAs) and real-time software in C.I returned to Vitec where I worked from 1995 until 2009 on a range of Broadcast Intercom Systems, Military Comms Trainers, Air Traffic Control Systems and Voice Communications for the European Space Agency (Mission Control for the ISS). All of this work was in real-time embedded C and Windows C# .NET. I was also the Project Manager for the installation of comms systems at BBC TV Centre from 2005-2010.In September 2010 I joined Synapse Ltd, a start-up Company providing data processing / MI generation services to FTSE-100 clients. Starting in a Software Contracting role, I progressed to be Team Lead of the Client-Facing Technologies side of the business, and from August 2011 until February 2012 held the position of Chief Architect. In June 2012 I joined CRFS Ltd to develop a new software product to provide very high-speed data processing and high-performance charting for RF Spectrum Analysis.Specialties: Real-time embedded C, Windows .Net C#, Broadcast Communication Systems, Excel / VBA, VB.NET
Listed skills include Software Development, Integration, Embedded Software, Software Engineering, and 15 others.

Software Consultant
Software Development in C#, to provide very high-speed data processing and high-performance charting for RF Spectrum Analysis.
Chief Architect
As Chief Architect my role specifically consists of:- Overall engineering design authority.- Technical lead for implementation and deployment.- Provide technical guidance and support to the engineering team in the design and implementation of Synaptic services.- Play a supportive career and skill development role for more junior members of the engineering team.Apart from the responsibilities listed above, I also continue to do hands-on design & development of complex VBA to develop Excel spreadsheets as sophisticated UI interfaces to a SQL server based data analysis engine. These are customised to suit individual clients in the finance industry, providing such clients with Resource Planning, Learning & Development analysis and MI generation.I have extensive experience of consultancy on a daily basis with several FTSE-100 clients to customise and develop this service to suit their needs.
Software Contractor
Senior Developer for the Broadcast Intercom Talk product which was also sold into the Military Training market - providing Voice Communication Simulators to the Army and Royal Navy, the latter requiring MOD security clearance. When Vitec moved into Air Traffic Control, I was responsible for the development of the safety critical realtime communications central switching matrix. Another project was for ESA: voice communications for Mission Controls located in Germany and France to the ISS Columbus Science Laboratory.A large project in the Broadcast Sector was for installations at the BBC (both London Television Centre and Elstree) for which I assumed the role of Project Manager.I also took a break from real-time C to pick up new skills in Windows C# .NET programming. I have developed a product for Vitec which uses the GoDiagram graphical product by Northwoods (www.nwoods.com) with whom I am registered as a Consultant.
Software Contractor
Win-Forms C# based GUI for use with BBC installations of the Vitec (Clear-Com) Intercom/Talback system, to BBC specification. The Clear-Com Intercom/Talkback system has a third party interface using a TCP/IP protocol to allow external control of the system. The BBC required their own bespoke interface to be designed and delivered as a turn-key project. I was responsible for capturing the user requirement through to installation / training in multiple studios.
Hardware/Software Contractor
Passive Optical Network (Telecommunications via optical fibre arranged in a tree structure rather than by point-to-point connections). Digital hardware design of control cards to develop and test a new generation of optical transmitters and receivers for a Passive Optical Network. Specification, design and coding of software running on PCs to control and demonstrate the network in operation. Optical receiver analogue circuit design. Digital design work included ECL logic and Altera EPLD devices. The EPLDs were programmed using AHDL to generate and receive pseudo-random sequences and cyclic redundancy checksums for bit error rate calculations. My responsibilities included the evaluation and integration of in-house designed FPGAs and ASICs coded in VHDL. The development environment was SUN/UNIX on SPARC stations, and Windows/MSDOS on PCs.
Software Contractor
Nuclear Medicine Imaging System. Specification, design, coding and test of real-time control software written in C to control an intelligent Digital Signal Processor, running on Intel x86 processors. The development environment was VAX/VMS and SUN/UNIX based, using X terminals.During this contract the client was audited for ISO 9001 conformance, and hence all work was to the appropriate standard.
Software Contractor
TV Studio Talk-back/Intercom Systems. Specification, design, coding and test of real-time embedded system software development using Pascal and 68000 assembly for user-interfaces and data communication systems.Conferencing/Talk-back System for the BBC for use on location at the Olympic Games in 1992. Specification, design, coding and test in C and 68000 assembly of a communication system based on a digital audio matrix. The software for the out-stations included hardware control, user-interface functionality and data communication to the central switching matrix. The software for the switching matrix included central communications to all out-stations and real-time calculation of audio levels for the digital audio matrix.Responsibilities also included the purchase, installation and management of, and staff training for a System V Release 4 UNIX system networked to PCs via Ethernet and TCP/IP.
Hardware Contractor
Original contract was to Design Review the digital data processing hardware developed for a new Nuclear Imaging product.Contract extended for specification, design, coding and test of C and PL/M real-time software running on embedded systems, and under iRMX286 and MSDOS.
Hardware Engineer
Employed by Marconi in September 1984 as a Graduate Engineer in ATE development. Due to a shortage of staff, was required to take immediate responsibility for a substantial part of a major new project - the development of an in-circuit test system - and was involved from conception through to production.Hardware design included 68000 microprocessor circuit design, high performance data acquisition and control functions, high speed communication links and backplane bus structures.Software development included specification, design, coding and test of control software in C under UNIX 4.3bsd, and hardware test procedures in 68000 assembly.
