The Local SEIU Unions in the Connecticut State Council together represent over 60,000 workers and retirees in the public sector at the state and municipal level, health care, higher education, home care, child care and other service industries. As Director of the State Council, I am responsible for developing and implementing (in coordination with the Locals and the International) joint issue, legislative and electoral campaign plans that incorporate aspects of field, lobbying, communications, research, coalition-building, and member-leadership development.

I directed the entire political program for the union, including advocacy work at the federal level and in each of the six states we operated in. My responsibilities included PAC fundraising, online activism and email/new media campaigns, endorsements of candidates and legislation, coordinating multi-organization coalition work, and training and education of members on issue campaigns. In this capacity, I was also the Secretary-Treasurer for the SEIU New Jersey State Council and the Treasurer for the SEIU Maryland/DC State Council.

I managed the internal and external communications and public relations operations of the union. My responsibilities included producing the print publications and support material for the union, speechwriting, all press operations, organizing public events, press conferences, and town halls, and managing the entire online presence of the organization, including the main website, microsites, social networking, email campaigns, and video. I managed a team of two people.

I was responsible for the launch of the union’s online presence, including a new web platform, its first series of email advocacy campaigns, blogging, social networking, and first forays in video. Ancillary duties included writing for the union’s publications and ghost writing for officers.

“Blogger/Editor” for the Universal Healthcare section of the site. Responsibilities included twice-daily blogging on issues related to healthcare reform, editing the work of guest bloggers, and launching regular featured online petition campaigns using the site’s tools.

Coordinated online organizing for final three weeks of the New York state primary campaign, including managing local email program, building assets and writing blog posts for http://ny.barackobama.com, utilizing social networks to recruit and activate volunteers in New York City, and managing auxiliary blogger and video volunteers. Worked closely with and reported to NY State Director.

Coordinated all online communication strategy and execution, including statewide email program, blogging, video production and pages for http://nh.barackobama.com, online organizing and social networking, main blogger liaison for New England, and authoring blog posts for external sites. Worked closely with the NH Communications Director, Deputy Communications director and Press secretary and reported to the NH Communications Director.

Executed day-to-day support for the offices of the statewide primary campaign and managed a team of one person.

Primary client contact and team leader, managing the interactive arm and online strategy for various clients including Anchor Blue, Primedia’s Outdoor Enthusiast Line, CIT Bank, Financial Times, Global Cash Access, Jiwani Custom Clothiers, the Kanye West Foundation, Amazon.com and Endless.com. Tasks included managing full Web site launches and builds, SEO, SEM, Media Buying, Banner Ad Production, Email Marketing, Metrics Analysis and Optimization, Video and Rich Media production, PR coordination, Client and Vendor Contract Negotiation, and integrated media and communication strategies for successful program launches.

I was the team lead, primary client contact and day-to-day manager for the Department of Educational Technology, managing the production of interactive CD-ROMs, streaming Web audio and video, and complex online solutions for clients including The Chemotherapy Foundation, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and the NYU Child Study Center.
