Although trained in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology and responsible for the collection Ancient Near Eastern Art, after 1978, I became increasingly interested in the MFA’s collection of archaeological material from Sudan, which had been brought back by the MFA’s expeditions to Kerma, Napata, and Meroe between 1913 and 1924, and which then were largely in storage. From 1981-84, I formed a traveling exhibition of this material (Kush: Lost Kingdom of the Nile) with the aim of getting it ultimately on view at the MFA in its own permanent gallery, which finally opened in 1992. I subsequently organized or assisted with eight more exhibitions on ancient Sudanese or African themes. One of these, highlighting the ancient city of Kerma, Sudan, I organized as guest curator for the National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC., which was on view there from 1996 to 2004.
