As the head of a conservation technology company I am applying decades of experience as a field biologist to the task of adapting emerging capacity to ecological management. Many of the most valuable things I've learned about Earth and biology have come by walking thousands of desert miles as a biologist - searching for tortoises. I think "Outside the Box" because I have spent so much time outside boxes discovering the astounding complexity and beauty of the wild world. I have learned that collaborating with engineers is much more valuable than commiserating with wildlife biologists. The can-do spirit of engineering must be massively applied to the ecological and conservation challenges we face.Having witnessed the steep decline of the desert tortoise, the primary subject of my work over 35 years as a field biologist, I am dedicated to keeping the species on the planet, but in the process to learn how the techniques we apply can be used elsewhere and for the benefit of other species. I am working to weave together the three main strands of my professional life - conservation technologies, biological research, and teaching - to pass on what I have learned to as many people as I can. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when it is shared. With my company, Hardshell Labs, I've begun exciting work with inventors, educators, technologists, entrepreneurs and funders of cutting edge conservation innovations, distilling what I have learned in a lifetime in the field into forms that will engage a wide audience in exploring and preserving their home planet. To know Earth is to love it, my job is to help people know it.

Field BiologistContractor With Bureau Of Land Management 1976 - PresentThe Desert Southwest, Many Locations In Ca, Az And NvI've been an integral contributor to the research studies which resulted in the desert tortoise's acknowledgement as a threatened species by the State of California and federal agencies. As a contractor in tortoise field research I am engaged in a wide variety of activities: capture, marking and release of wild tortoises, health assessments, radio-tracking, recovery and analysis of carcasses, recording presence of tortoise predators and many other activities associated with field projects designed to track population trends of this threatened species. Among my favorite work is focal behavioral observation - long periods spent watching a single animal and recording its every move. One of my proudest accomplishments is to have trained around 200 people in various aspects of tortoise field biology - directly transmitting the knowledge I've gained to a new generation of field workers and learning from them in turn. In the process we've also had a lot of fun.Over my 35 year career as a field biologist I have witnessed the collision between my species and the desert tortoise. The bulk of my work has been to "document the decline," a distressingly common occupation for modern biologists. Working with pioneering tortoise biologist, Dr. Kristin Berry, I have worked to understand the many overlapping causes of the decline. I am investigating the potential of applying new and rapidly developing technologies to address factors in the decline I have helped document. I am currently working on the problem of raven predation on tortoises with a view toward establishing raven-free zones where juvenile tortoises will be protected. I hope to extend the effect of these discoveries to wider conservation applications.Among others I contributed to the U.S. Department of the Interior's, Bureau of Land Management's, 1980 California Desert Conservation Area Plan, shown at http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/blm/ca/pdf/cdd/cdcaplan.Par.15259.File.dat/CA_Desert_.pdf

Educator In Conservation Sciences, Drama And DebateHaines High School 2003 - PresentHaines, AkI've cooperated with the Haines School District for years to offer classes which would otherwise not be possible. District-certified teachers of record work with me as I design and deliver classroom curricula.Three examples are:Desert Tortoise Conservation Design, in cooperation with Science teacher Mark Fontenot and Trillium Learning founder Ron Fortunato: These new classes will allow both biology and engineering students to participate in the new design, construction and testing of devices to be used in desert tortoise field conservation applications. We will use Trillium's relationship with NASA labs to bring cutting edge technologies to bear on these projects.Natural Resources Careers, in cooperation with Science teacher Mark Fontenot: Designed and delivered by me to familiarize students with the broad outlines of ecology. Provided as background for detailed discussions of specific jobs as natural resource managers (in Fish and Game or land management agencies) and natural history interpreters (wildlife tour guides, teachers). Other experts were also brought in by me to address classes. We successfully introduce potential employers to prospective employees and several internships resulted from these introductions.Drama, Debate and Forensics (DDF) Class, in cooperation with English teacher Joanne Ross-Cunningham: I provided students training in speaking and dramatic arts, applying lessons learned in English classes to live performances. The formalized DDF class was offered for one year and very popular, but I coached students for several years. Members of the DDF team received academic credit as they prepared for tournaments and all students got a taste of the world of performance. I was also honored to receive Coach of the Year by the Alaska School Activities Association.

Sound Waves And History Talk Radio ShowsKhns-Fm 1994 - PresentHaines, AkSound Waves is the long running, weekly morning show for KHNS-FM public radio. In its 8 AM to 10 AM slot it follows NPR's "Morning Edition" and local news and so it has a large audience. My main focus is on music. I play long, eclectic sets designed as musical journeys and I take pride in the quality of my segues. I love to start a five song set with Judy Collins and end up with "They Might Be Giants" or "Radiohead," but still have each pair of songs transition seamlessly. Being a DJ is a wonderful way to stay current on the music scene and I play as much new music as old. I also deliver weather reports, a community calendar and Listener Personals, the unique Alaskan audio message board allowing people to leave messages for one another and their communties. On Tuesday morning I also host the History Talk with representatives of the Sheldon Museum in Haines and the Klondike National Historical Park in Skagway, who regale of us with stories of the past.

Watershed Weekly RadioKhns-Fm 2004 - 2011Haines, AkI was the voice and writer of "Watershed Weekly," a long-running series produced by Takshanuk Watershed Council, broadcast on National Public Radio Affiliate KHNS-FM. Five-minute segments introduced members of the listening audience to a wide variety of topics on the natural world with an emphasis on salmon, their habitat and their importance to the fishing communities of southeast Alaska. The science behind watershed health and ecology was presented in an accessible form with frequent use of natural background sounds. The show built a listenership and constituency for watershed conservation by showing the community what it had at stake in taking care of its land and waters, and secondary and elementary schools also used it. The show's popularity led to a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the production of 24 new segments of Watershed Weekly in 2008. These were broadcast twice weekly, in prominent spots in the broadcast day, between 2008 and 2011 funded by a grant from local fisherman Norman Hughes. There's an archive page at the Takshanuk Watershed Council site, here http://takshanuk.org/node/222, which has audio files from KHNS-FM. There's also a sample episode below. I was glad to have the help of John Hunt and Chris Bowman who edited for us. Teachers guides for elementary and secondary schools were written by Pam Randles.

Executive Director And Co-FounderTakshanuk Watershed Council Jan 2003 - May 2010Haines, AlaskaAs Co-Founder and first Executive Director for the Takshanuk Watershed Council (TWC) I was responsible for establishing the role of the council, in a community dependent on a healthy salmon fishery and prone to land use conflicts. The founding vision that guided my partners and I was research demonstrating the value of salmon-rearing habitat, which would bring to light resolutions for heated community discussions over how to treat the land and waters that feed us.I was responsible for conducting the administrative tasks associated with running our nonprofit, with designing and participating in a great number of field research and habitat restoration projects and with guiding the interaction between the council, the community and local, state and federal agencies. We placed a great emphasis on working with the local school district and TWC remains an active partner in the schools to this day.I also helped spearhead an effort to form a regional consortium of watershed councils, the Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition, to share expertise, information and equipment - avoiding unnecessary duplication of effort and helping to create a wider community of local groups working to forge a healthy relationship between people, wild creatures and the land and water they all need.We received a 2005 grant from the US EPA for: "Nature Studies Outdoor Education Expansion for the Haines Borough." Students in grades 3 through 8 from the Haines Borough School District receive education about local environmental issues and individual choices and their effect on the watershed. It provides educators with an existing environmental education curriculum expanded from nine study units to 20, with a focus on increasing activities for middle school grades. It also introduces students to the work of professional and technical scientists to encourage environmental careers.
