Pediatric neuro-oncology research under the mentorship of Dr. Patrick Zweidler McKay and Dr. Joseph McCarty, Department of Pediatric Oncology.Evaluated the importance of neurotrophin receptors (TRK) and integrin signaling in neuroblastoma (pediatric neuro-endocrine tumor) and glioblastoma (malignant glial tumor). Cell lines derived from patient samples as well as primary neuronal mouse cultures were used to investigate downstream signaling pathways involved in proliferation, anchorage dependence, and survival.• Discovered the relationship between the Src family member, Fyn, and TrkB as an important regulator of differentiation in neuroblastoma. • Identified that αVβ8 integrin expression is regulated via Ras as a novel pathway important for neurovascular development between neural cells and blood vessels in the CNS. • Designed and implemented a phospho-flow based assay to assess the effects of Fyn retroviral/lentiviral constructs of SRC/FYN phosphorylation as a downstream regulator of TrkB activation. • Established an orthotopic xenograft mouse model (via intra-adrenal injection) and luciferase-based whole model imaging to monitor tumor progression and metastases.
