Executive Director
Foothills Connect Business And Technology Center
Rutherfordton, North Carolina
In an economically devastated Appalachian region, I designed and directed economic and educational programs and led staff development for a non-profit rural, Appalachian economic development and entrepreneurship support program original created by the e-NC Authority. Borrowing from previous corporate skills, Foothills Connect was responsible for raising the capital to design and install a county-wide, private, non profit, fiber optic network that supported the creation a disruptive, web based, transactional application, farmersfreshmarket.org. The program enabled diverse, resilient, rural small farm businesses to display and sell their inventory to eager urban populations. resulting in job creation, small business development. The small farm businesses were supported by a series of services ranging from computer, entrepreneurial and agricultural and product training to developing new markets for farm output. The program digitally connecting the region to the outside world, revitalizing a moribund regional agricultural economy and the creation of many small farm businesses. In recognition of this work I was awarded encore.org's Purpose Prize in 2009 and the Hewlett Packard Hackborn Award for the use of technology on social innovation.
