Aug 2011 - Aug 2013

Executive Director

Foothills Connect Business And Technology Center

Rutherfordton, North Carolina

In an economically devastated Appalachian region, I designed and directed economic and educational programs and led staff development for a non-profit rural, Appalachian economic development and entrepreneurship support program original created by the e-NC Authority. Borrowing from previous corporate skills, Foothills Connect was responsible for raising the capital to design and install a county-wide, private, non profit, fiber optic network that supported the creation a disruptive, web based, transactional application, farmersfreshmarket.org. The program enabled diverse, resilient, rural small farm businesses to display and sell their inventory to eager urban populations. resulting in job creation, small business development. The small farm businesses were supported by a series of services ranging from computer, entrepreneurial and agricultural and product training to developing new markets for farm output. The program digitally connecting the region to the outside world, revitalizing a moribund regional agricultural economy and the creation of many small farm businesses. In recognition of this work I was awarded encore.org's Purpose Prize in 2009 and the Hewlett Packard Hackborn Award for the use of technology on social innovation.

Oct 2006 - Aug 2011

High School Social Studies Teacher

Design And Architecture High School

Miami, Florida

Following my passion for education, I taught for three years at an incredible magnet school where a diverse population of industrious, creative, and motivated, primarily inner city, students were prepared for life with a unique educational opportunities in a terrifically creative public high school environment. I taught Advanced Placement and Honors US History and Human Geography: left brain subjects to primarily right brain dominant students. My corporate technical and presentation skills permitted me to design a highly visual curriculum that appealed to the students, many of whom had never before appreciated social studies. Offering 7 concentrations from New Media to Industrial Design, the students were required to maintain a 3.0 overall GPA to remain in the school while taking 32 courses to graduate in a state where only 18 are required. Our graduates have gone on to achieve great success in the arts, business, education and in their communities.

Oct 2004 - Jul 2006

Director Of Marketing And Business Development

Telecommunications Technology

Western Hemisphere

Previous data and telecommunication experience gained in the US Army permitted me, 15 years later, to be recruited into NYNEX, one of seven newly created Baby Bells. I worked for a small (1500 persons) division called BISC, Business Information Systems Corporation that performed high level local and wide area networking service for corporations. Assigned to the New Orleans, then Miami regions. Constantly analyzing the business systems needs and available technologies within this highly volatile and competitive environment, I developed telecommunications strategies for a wide variety of business clients. Highly recruited as very profitable producer of creative new networking services and solutions, eventually I was recruited and promoted to Director of Business Development for several high tech companies and assigned to develop their North, Central and South American markets, the latter designing solutions during that continent's decade of telecommunications privitization from the formally nationalized phone companies. I was employed or partnered on projects with multiple companies from IBM, Alcatel, Sprint, Cisco and EMC designing and implementing fixed, fiber and wireless broadband system and failsafe data center solutions.
