About Tim Pickens

With a career spanning over 3 decades, Pickens has developed and delivered hardware solutions to facilitate affordable and responsive space access. He is an inventor, engineer, entrepreneur, innovator, and designer, primarily focused on aerospace solutions. Pickens has provided consulting services as a subject matter expert in commercial aerospace, propulsion, and product commercialization. He has served as a SME on hybrid and liquid propulsion systems and has done extensive work on valve design and repair. Pickens applies lean philosophies to develop creative solutions and innovative partnerships to provide responsive, low-cost products and services in the aerospace industry, specializing in the design, fabrication, and testing of propulsion hardware systems. He has designed liquid and hybrid rocket motors ranging from five to 375,000 pounds of thrust; led composite component design and manufacturing of rocket motor cases, nozzles, tanks, and other vehicle components; designed and constructed multiple test set-ups involving the use of advanced instrumentation, signal conditioning and data acquisition-related electronics; and designed and constructed rocket fluid control electronics, as well as specialized prototype test equipment and machinery. With proven experience in leading game changing commercial space propulsion technology development, Pickens most notably worked on SpaceShipOne, the $10 million Ansari X Prize winner, as the Lead Propulsion Developer. This effort included development of the main propulsion system as well as the RCS. Following the success of SpaceShipOne, Pickens founded Orion Propulsion, a Huntsville aerospace company, that received multiple Small Business awards and became AS9100-certified to build man-rated flight hardware. In 2009, with over 40 employees and $6.4 million in annual revenue, Orion was bought by Dynetics. Following the acquisition of Orion, Pickens’ next endeavor was the formation of Pickens Innovations, which supported such companies as Firefly, Virgin Galactic, Virgin Orbit, Radian, and Bigelow Aerospace. Ultimately, Pickens moved to Teledyne Engineering as a SME in nitrous oxide with supporting applications used in the development of a hot air hypersonic wind tunnel. Ultimately, the lure of commercial space drove him back to his roots and he is now the President and CTO of Pickens Scientific.Specialties: Commercial Space; Product Design & Development; Valve Design/Repair; Liquid, Gaseous and Hybrid Propulsion; Design, Fabrication and Related Testing; Acoustic Igniters

    Founder And Ceo
Pickens Innovations, Inc. Jul 2012 - Mar 2022
Founder/CEO of Pickens Innovations, Inc. (PI), a small aerospace company specializing in aerospace hardware, engineering, and R&D; and consulting. Technical areas of consulting include hybrid and liquid propulsion systems, including injector design, ablatives, feed systems, and valves. Business consulting includes product marketing and commercial space.Services provided include valve repair and refurbishment for testing, etc. Product development and design services: torch igniters, hybrid and liquid propulsion systems, fluid systems, and fluid component development from conception to AS9100-based production using competitive manufacturing partners to optimize product costs. Examples of PI contract awards: a program to design and build a 250k thrust stand and fluid system for a commercial space company, and a program to design and fabricate a hydrogen/oxygen test stand to test a sub-scale rocket engine for Stratolaunch. In 2017, PI sold the Stratolaunch program and test hardware to EST, a Huntsville start-up company purchased by GAN. PI is not a launch vehicle company, but an affordable aerospace component supplier and partner with a very focused and proven business charter to provide amazing products at cost points that are not achievable with most large businesses. PI started out exclusively as a consulting firm in 2012, expanding its charter in 2016 to include R&D and hardware design and development.www.pickensinnovations.com
  • Bigelow Aerospace
    Bigleow Aerospace Propulsion Department Manager
    Bigelow Aerospace Aug 2015 - Jan 2016
    North Las Vegas, Nv, Us
Led a Huntsville-based accelerated methane hot-fire test program based on 5 lbf H2 and O2 heritage thrusters. Orion Propulsion developed these thrusters for Bigelow/Sundancer in 2008, an effort that was also led by Pickens, along with his Orion team. The goal of this recent Huntsville activity was to quickly and affordably evaluate the ignition characteristics using CH4 (methane) as an alternative propellant in a vacuum environment. The test program was aggressive and affordable; the facility and testing occurred in about two months. Key objectives were accomplished with a small "tiger team" before larger scale testing was moved to the Las Vegas headquarters where existing AS9100 Quality Standards support the production of man-rated fight hardware.
