Dr Ting Chen Email and Phone Number
I am a PhD with a strong background in organic chemistry, polymer science, and material characterisation. I am pursuing my degree in Energy and Advanced Manufacturing at the University of South Australia. My research focuses on commercial high-density polyethylene pipes, specifically the compatibility between the pipe and electrofusion jointing materials. My doctoral research is in collaboration with an industrial partner in the oil and gas sector. During the research, I performed a 16-month aging study on the HDPE samples under different conditions. My research aimed to characterise the degradation process of the samples at different aging states and assess the pipe material's performance based on the findings. I also reported the research progress and findings directly to our industrial partner (end-user) to better understand the pipe material under certain conditions. My research experience has enabled me to bridge the gap between academic skills and industrial demands, fostering continual learning and growth.I also had the opportunity to complete an honours research project in the conducting polymers field. The main goal of this research was to improve the synthetic process for a conducting polymer called PEDOT. During the project, I gained experience operating a novel synthesis technique known as vapour phase polymerisation, fabricating thin polymer films on a substrate. The research primarily focused on examining how different dopant solutions affected the structural integrity and electrical conductivity of these films.

Phd Candidate At University Of South AustraliaUniversity Of South Australia Mar 2020 - Apr 2024Adelaide, South Australia, AustraliaHigh-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are widely used in irrigation, potable water, sewerage, transmission pipelines, and cable insulation applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance and long service life. Electrofusion welding, a popular technique for joining HDPE pipes, uses heat from resistive wire to permanently weld the pipe and joint. However, the copper resistive wire often found in many electrofusion joints as the main heating element can potentially accelerate the natural aging process of HDPE, leading to the risk of premature failure. This raises significant concerns for HDPE pipe users who rely on electrofusion welding. Additionally, the lack of available literature on the effects of copper resistive wire on HDPE pipe degradation highlights the need for more research. During my PhD, I collaborated closely with an industry partner in the energy sector, which owns an extensive HDPE pipeline network spanning thousands of kilometres across Australia. My research focused on determining the long-term impact of copper resistive wire within electrofusion joints on the integrity of HDPE pipes. -
Traineeship StudentUniversity Of South Australia Nov 2016 - Jun 2017Mawson LakesDuring this traineeship, I had the opportunity to work with a fascinating conducting polymer known as PEDOT. This polymer holds immense potential in the field of digital sensors, particularly in the development of wearable health devices. Our main project scope was to develop a highly conductive PEDOT, a task that required us to experiment with different dopants while ensuring material stability. My role primarily involved fabricating the polymer samples using a novel vapour phase polymerisation technique and then carefully characterising their properties, including film-thickness, electrical conductivity, and light absorbance.
