Honesty, Energy, Economy, System. I began my career building sounding rocket payloads for the Air Force at Wentworth Institute (HISTAR, et. al., see below) but had discovered that I had a knack for digital logic and computers that was recognized and encouraged by my instructors and department head at Wentworth - Thank You, Mr. Avgtis - who sent me to interview with an old friend and Wentworth classmate at DEC who was looking for a technician and who hired me. (Thank You, Steve Adrian.) After 40-odd years (some of them very odd) in the computer industry at all technical levels from Associate Field Service Technician thru Corporate Support Software Engineer (SYSERR, SPEAR), Instructor (Intro to KL10), Software Engineer (Galaxy BiSync, VS100) and CAD system Support Engineer (CAE 2000 - VAX9000), I ended up doing UNIX/Linux Systems Administration and Storage Systems Administration. God, do I miss DEC.As the song goes: "What a long, strange trip it's been."​ ;^) My first machines were DEC PDP8s (L, Straight and 680I in that order for you PDP8 mavens) running FOCAL. My second was an IBM 1130 running FORTRAN. I got hooked writing FOCAL programs on the PDP8-680I at WIT to make plots to add to my semiconductor lab reports and it was all downhill from there. I graduated to PDP10s when I joined DEC Field Service. I can now run an emulated PDP10 on a PC laptop with better performance than the fastest PDP10 model, basically a roomful of equipment condensed to a handful. A friend has gone that one better and condensed basically an entire PDP10 system to a single module with the entire CPU (and MIT pager, reverse engineered from reading ITS code) inside a single FPGA with performance about 3X the original KA10 with no tweaks.
