In my role in Toshiba I was funded under a European Marie Curie Initial training network (ITN) in Photonic Integrated Compound QUantum Encoding (PICQUE). Note that for some reason all EU projects require an acronym. What this basically entailed was studying not just the fascinating features of quantum physics but the potential for real world developments and applications as well. This involved integrated photonic quantum technologies - single photons sources, light-wave circuits and detection. http://www.picque.eu/

Tutoring, lab demonstrating and guest lecturer for an introductory course in science, Science: Today and Tomorrow (EDUC 108), offered by the Eudcation department at Macquarie University. This unit is a "planet unit", a 3 credit point course intended to orbit your main course of study, offered to anyone pursuing their undergraduate degree (both internally and externally) at Macquarie University. However, it's main focus is for students intending to pursue a degree in primary school education. The course assumes no prior science background and as it's main goal seeks to empower future primary school teachers to share a love of science with their students. This is acheived through hands on laboratory practicals which focus on low cost, fun, exciting and intellectually enriching experiments. These practicals are undertaken by specialists in their field who are excited to generalise and increase the breadth of their own understanding. These practicals span biology, earth and environmental science, chemistry and of course physics. Featuring guest lectures from all the unit practical demonstrators whose expertise ranges from chemistry, earth and environment, biology and physics.As a guest lecturer whose background is in photonics I have been privileged to share my passion about photonics with the future "first contact" science communicators for the next generation!
