Designer And Risk Lead On Design And Make ProjectRolls-Royce Sep 2016 - Nov 2016Derby, United KingdomA project involving 4 graduates, tasked with delivering a rig to suit customer requirements in a restricted timespan of only 12 weeks. The restricted time and complexity of deliver all the customer requirements was challenging for the whole team.My responsibilities included risk management and design. The management and more importantly mitigation strategies for our project risks was key to ensuring the project delivery did not slip. The review panel and customers recognised the clear and logical mitigation plans of action and key decision dates that were crucial to our plan and were as a direct result of risk identification, communication and the resulting strategy. The design role not only involved all rig static hardware design, but integrating our solutions with the requirements of both internal and external customers to the organisation and capabilities of external suppliers. A design optimised by clear communication and understanding of requirements was achieved within the demanding timescales of the project.Throughout the project I displayed clear logical thinking to a wide variety of tasks and received feedback stating I am very good at listening, thinking, and then making a worthwhile and intelligent verbal intervention. -
Trent Xwb Development Engineer - Fans And CompressorsRolls-Royce Feb 2016 - Aug 2016Derby, United KingdomQuickly integrated into a fast paced team and developed the trust to be the sole point of contact and owner for fan statics hardware within a month of joining the team. This responsibility and developing such a level of understanding so rapidly was challenging however I demonstrated significant learning agility to seamlessly fill this role. The team showed confidence in my delivery and understanding of my role.I took the initiative to develop a cross project knowledge sharing forum between Trent XWB and Trent 1000 engine projects. The feedback and engagement was very positive and I was commended for the added value that this fortnightly session had on both projects. -
Trent7000 Systems Design And Integration EngineerRolls-Royce Sep 2015 - Jan 2016Derby, United KingdomFirst attachment on the Rolls-Royce graduate scheme: Define.Engineering and customer interface role with Airbus. Trent7000 project lead on capability acquisition study on Engine to aircraft interfaces. Engineering analysis and recommendations for a way forward agreed between all parties.Developed a Matlab simulink model to analyse system sensitivity to various parameters. Developed the team's technical understanding and resulted in a 4kg+ weight saving and solution to interference between components on the engine's core.CS-E Certification Reports - developed an integrated project plan across engineering functions to ensure 2 key certification reports were scheduled for completion within demanding timescales. A key part of this role was understanding the dependencies on the report, where the number of inputs exceeded 100. Negotiation and clear communication with owners of dependencies was vital in ensuring a robust and project plan that was achievable. At the completion of this attachment, some of the 100 inputs of data had been delivered and I had drafted a Certification report with "TBDs" which were to be completed when the final inputs were delivered, which allowed for a simple handover of responsibilities. -
Summer InternRolls-Royce Jun 2014 - Aug 2014Derby, United KingdomMy role for 10 weeks, in summer 2014, was under the wing of Engineering For Services, working within the Service Engineering Team on the Trent 700 and 500. I had a broad variety of projects that I was working on simultaneously that involved multiple functional elements of the Large Civil Engines Team. -
Summer Intern - Nuffield Science BursaryBentley Motors Ltd Aug 2010 - Sep 2010Crewe, United KingdomHaving been awarded a Nuffield Science Bursary (now known as the Nuffield Research Placement) I enjoyed 5 weeks of work on a project in the Chassis and Powertrain Department at Bentley Motors. I was assigned to the tyre department which is made up of a team of four Engineers. My job was to develop and test prototypes of a tyre internal absorber used to reduce tyre internal cavity resonance when operating at a fixed high speed. The project gave me an insight into a professional engineering work environment and provided me with the skills to successfully see a project through from start to finish.Project Details:Bentley are at the forefront of automotive engineering, with huge amounts of investment aimed at increasing ride comfort to satisfy customer expectations. They have refined many of the typical noise contributors on the vehicle, such as the engine, and now one of the most prominent noise within the cabin is road-induced noise. A major factor of road-induced noise in a vehicle is the vibration characteristics of its tyres. The air in the tyre cavity is put into motion by the rotation of the tyre. The continual movement of air causes a standing wave to form. At extended lengths of time at a constant speed this standing wave becomes more defined and the tyre and wheel assembly vibrates at its natural frequency. The vibrations are transmitted to the cabin via the suspension and the chassis resulting in a less smooth ride performance, and an audible 'droning noise'.The aim of the project was to design a simple, low cost device to disrupt the standing wave within the tyre cavity, subsequently reducing the level of noise and vibrations produced and improving the ride experience. We developed a Tyre Internal Absorbers (TIAs), which absorbed a high proportion of the vibrations created in the tyre cavity. The TIA was also compatible with Bentley's standard issue puncture repair fluid. The design was later approved by head engineers for manufacture.
