I work in a low barrier congregate shelter in downtown Portland, providing 80+ unhoused individuals with day to day support and opportunities to transition toward sustainable housing. Half of my job consists of the daily tasks required to keep a large shelter running smoothly such as cleaning, stocking and simply building relationships with the people we serve. The latter focus is particularly important as we support a diverse group of people who generally always have trauma and unique hardships that can only be successfully worked through with genuine human connection. The other half of the job is the actual case management. I work with 6-7 participants on average, identifying their barriers to getting housed and navigating various housing lists, social programs and governments bureaucracies to move them in a positive direction.

I had no set daily schedule but used practical judgement to allocate my time most efficiently and was in constant communication with my coworkers to tailor my tasks to their needs.

As a nonprofit canvasser I went door to door to educate strangers about various environmental and political campaigns as well as to collect donations and petition signatures. As a Field Manager I decided where all the canvassers assigned to my team would go each day. I prepared and encouraged them and participated in the canvassing myself, often accompanied by new canvassers who would shadow me and learn the necessary skills for success.
