Cog (Commander Of Operations Group)The National Training Center Jun 2010 - Jun 2012Fort Irwin, CaServed in a role similar to that of a Chief Operations Officer for a large company. Led a high performing organization consisting of over 500 military and 150 civilian personnel, 550 vehicles, a helicopter flight detachment, and an annual operating budget of approximately 60 million dollars. Designed and executed major exercises for between 5000 and 9000 military personnel on a monthly basis. Provided guidance and oversight to planning efforts that closely replicated conditions in Iraq or Afghanistan for each exercise. Personally facilitated several After Action Reviews (self-discovery learning events, two hours in length) for training unit senior leaders as part of each major exercise, and provided a variety of high level briefings to senior Army and civilian visitors on a monthly basis. Responsible for a Leader Development Program to improve leadership abilities and planning skills in people and units prior to their NTC rotation. Led an organizational change initiative over an 18 month period to operationalize the Army’s new Decisive Action Training Environment for its units, and contributed to the Hybrid Threat model that defined future opposing force structure and actions. Provided subordinates with the vision, intent, planning guidance for this project, while exercising oversight and approval for all products associated with Decisive Action exercises. Brigade Combat Team Commander1St Cavalry Division Apr 2008 - Apr 2010Fort Hood, TxLed an Armored Brigade Combat Team consisting of 3800 Soldiers in the U.S., and later task organized with over 4500 Soldiers in Iraq during combat operations. Trained the brigade and its six battalions for counter-insurgency operations in Baghdad, Iraq. Mentored and developed six subordinate senior level managers (battalion commanders) – four of whom were later selected for brigade level command. In Iraq, the brigade was assigned the most dangerous zones in Baghdad, and given responsibility for the largest sector within the 1st Cavalry Division’s area of operations. Lived and worked alongside thousands of Iraqi Security Force members on a daily basis. The brigade conducted more combat operations, detained more insurgents, fired more artillery, and executed more civil capacity projects on behalf of the Iraqi people than any unit in the division. In conjunction with the 1st Cavalry Division's Aviation Brigade, my unit planned and executed the first U.S. and Iraqi combined Air Assault operations in history – to include the full integration of both American and Iraqi ground units, as well as American and Iraqi helicopters, while overcoming the friction associated with uncommon languages and incompatible communications systems. Reduced the level of violence in the brigade’s battle space by over 70%, enabling a seamless transition of security responsibilities to the Iraqi forces. Performed maintenance management for a large fleet with hundreds of combat vehicles and related property with a combined value approaching one billion dollars – and maintained them all in excess of Army readiness standards. Despite the harsh conditions that accompany deployment, created a positive organization climate that resulted in my unit leading the Army in re-enlistment and retention objectives, and in promotion rates to senior non-commissioned officer ranks, while every eligible officer in the brigade was selected for a battalion level command.

Integrated all joint assets within the division’s area of operations including unmanned aerial vehicles, fixed and rotary wing aircraft, special operations forces, indirect fires, special intelligence assets, and counter-IED capabilities. Synchronized combat, support, and sustainment activities in conjunction with the Division Staff and in support of the Division’s Brigade Combat Teams. Ensured the execution of Commanding General’s intent, guidance, and direction through written and verbal instructions, as well as rehearsals and the art of Mission Command. Fellow - John F. Kennedy School Of GovernmentU.S. Army War College Jul 2005 - Jun 2006Boston, MaU.S. Army War College Fellowship at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Earned a Master's Degree in National Security Studies from the US Army War College as a result of this experience. The Army's fellowship program is a unique opportunity offered to a small group of officers to attend elite institutions of higher education as an experience in lieu of attendance at one of the military’s Senior Service Colleges. The fellowship allows for a wide variety of study tailored to each student’s specific interests. In addition to authoring an analysis of General George Patton’s tragic “Hammelburg Raid” in the closing days of World War II, I was an author on a paper that explored the future of U.S. energy security and offered policy recommendations for the Caspian Sea Basin.
