iFAST is developing a game-changing, rapid antimicrobial susceptibility test, that will enable every patient with a bacterial infections to receive the right antibiotic, on time, every time. Currently these tests take 48-72 hours, but ours is 10x faster, cheaper and involves less tedious manual labour. This is a $4bn market and we expect to bring our product to market at the end of next year....

I teach Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Business Planning and Strategy to students in the Business School, ranging from one-off lectures to undergraduates, to teaching whole modules to MBA students. I also mentor aspiring entrepreneurs and work with SetSquared to help new startups/spinouts develop and grow - currently working with Prof Hywel Morgan and the team in ECS to spin out iFAST, an amazing rapid Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test that can identify the correct antibiotic for every patient up to 10x faster than current methods. This will save many lives and be a big part of the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance. I also advise and Chair the Board of Radii Devices, another cutting edge medtech spinout from UoS, led by the amazing Dr Josh Steer.

I was part of a small group of experienced medical device entrepreneurs and developers who came together to help deliver a simple, robust and highly scalable ventilator to combat COVID19. Together with amazing teams from Schlumberger and Huxley Bertram, we took the design through to the point where it is ready for final testing, CE mark and other approvals, and are now making it available, for free, to any institution that wants to commercialise it, particularly in Developing countries.

Bowman Power Systems develop and build energy recovery systems for diesel and gas engines, to improve efficiency and power density, and to reduce emissions. The main applications are currently in distributed power (I.e. stationary gensets) and the payback time is typically 12-24 months. The technology has achieved over 15 million running hours, and is endorsed through global deals with industry leaders such as Wartsila, Aggreko and Cummins.
